Hey, hey! Tuesdays are fun for me these days because they’re the day I move to the next week pregnancy. I’m alway so excited to read about all of the developments going on with the baby week-to-week.
I’m not sure if I’ll do these updates weekly or bi-weekly but I thought I’d do one today since I haven’t yet! Also, I snapped a picture of my groceries at 9 weeks pregnant because Tanner laughed at me (in a loving way) when he saw what I purchased.
15 WEEKS PREGNANCY UPDATE
At week 15 the baby is the size of a navel orange, according to The Bump app. My other app (Glow Nurture) says a pear.
Here’s what’s going on with baby this week:
- All of the joints and limbs can move, bone and marrow continuing to develop and muscles are developing too. By the end of the week, baby will be able to make a fist!
- The baby’s proportions are becoming more normal with legs now longer than arms. Eyes and ears have more of a baby-like appearance.
- Hair is starting to appear on the scalp and eyebrows and if the baby is going to have dark hair, the pigment may start developing now (Tanner and I have such different coloring that it will be fascinating to see how baby turns out!).
Since we missed week 14, it’s worth noting that a lot was going on last week! The reproductive system had the most development with prostate gland forming if it’s a boy and ovaries moving down into baby girl’s pelvis. Also, the thyroid gland started functioning and baby started producing hormones.
I find all of this so crazy interesting!
And here’s what’s going on with mom this week! 🙂 <3
Weight Gain/Body Changes: I think I’m still hovering around that 5-6 pound mark for weight gain. I think the bump is the tiniest bit more visible than last week and again, SO many of my students are commenting on it, especially when I wear fitted tanks to teach. I’m also noticing more changes in my breasts and they are growing more than they ever have in my life! I know most people probably can’t tell but when you go from nothing to something it’s a big step! (keep reading for a funny story about that)
Workouts/Workout Modifications: Workouts feel great – running, lifting and yoga. I haven’t had to make any new modifications this week but I will write a post soon with all of the changes I’ve made so far in pregnancy, especially for yoga and lifting.
Symptoms: Not having a lot of physical symptoms but what a fun emotional rollercoaster I am on constantly. 😉
Food Aversions: None of these, although I have lost interest in ice cream recently…which is sad.
Food Cravings: Nope.
Sleep: Like I mentioned yesterday, I either have a hard time falling asleep and sleep fitfully or fall asleep easily into a deep sleep. I go in cycles of a few days of one and then a few days of the other.
Maternity Clothes: Nope. Although I have abandoned all of my clothes that were already on the small side in favor of those that are a little comfier/stretchier.
Miss Anything: Not going to lie, a glass of red wine would be nice! Making due with kombucha in a wine glass instead. It’s all good.
Fun/Weird Stuff Shares: First, I had my first EVER experience with chaffing at Saturday’s half marathon. During the race it felt like someone was poking me with a hot pin under my chest. I thought maybe it was the safety pins from my bib. When I got in the shower after the race and stepped into the water I felt searing pain and looked down and saw that I had chaffed at the line of my sports bra under my chest. My sports bras still fit fine but I guess this slight change in breast size caused it. Ouch! Second, I had a dream last night that the baby was several months old (I won’t tell you what gender I dreamed) and that we still hadn’t named it. Haha.
Reading/Listening To: Not reading any baby books at the moment but I do regularly listen to episodes of the Birthful Podcast. I’ve tried a few pregnancy podcasts and this one is by FAR my favorite. I do not recommend Common Sense Pregnancy & Parenting or The Pregnancy Podcast, just my personal opinion, but I found both hosts to be hard to connect/relate to. I LOVE Adriana Lozada who hosts the Birthful Podcast and I’ve found the episodes to be educational, helpful and thought-provoking.
Looking Forward To: Finding out the gender at our 18 week ultrasound! It’s on December 4 so less than three weeks to go. We have a good guess on what we think it is, I’d love to hear yours! 🙂
WHAT I BOUGHT AT WHOLE FOODS AT 9 WEEKS PREGNANT
You’ll see a lot of the usual suspects but this was definitely the first time I came home with pregnancy-specific craving items, including:
- Animal cookies
- Quack n’ Bites cheese crackers
- Chocolate syrup
- Pumpkin pie gelato and cookies & cream ice cream
- Frozen BBQ chicken pizza
- Ginger tea
I think Tanner got the biggest kick out of the chocolate syrup. I was like, “it’s for my ice cream…you can’t have a bowl of ice cream without chocolate syrup!”
Also to be noted, the brand of granola you see above I would not recommend. I ended up returning both bags because it was so bad, and I rarely do that.
That’s all for today’s update! Let me know if I’m missing anything that you’d like for me to include in these pregnancy updates.
I’d love your gender guess – boy or girl!?
What were some of your early pregnancy cravings and aversions?
Love these posts! Thanks for sharing! My guess is boy;) because your symptoms, or lack there of, sound so similar to mine. (I did have aversions to vegetables in the beginning but thankfully it only lastest a few weeks.) Sending you all the good vibes!! Look forward to hearing more.
You’re welcome! We can’t wait to find out and will be absolutely thrilled regardless!
I guess boy too! I was super sick with both of my girls, and so pimply (GROSS) – girls steal your beauty!! either way, boy or girl, you would love them more than you can even comprehend. I type this with my 6 week old wrapped up on me 🙂 so snuggly.
I have heard that old wives tale about “girls steal your beauty, boys make you glow.” Definitely having my share of breakouts this week. No fun! Your snuggly baby sounds amazing! 🙂
So excited for you and Tanner. I craved Firehouse subs. I had to eat as soon as I woke up in the morning early on because I felt like I’d be sick if I didn’t. I am guess girl on the gender (I’m always wrong about such things except for when I guessed my two).
Thank you! I’ve been eating first thing too because in first trimester, I would get nauseous if I was too hungry…also I wake up starving most mornings!
I’d guess boy, for no reason other than I think I’ve read that Tanner has brother and my husband only has a brother and there are tons of boys in his family, so maybe they’re more inclined to boys genetically? Haha, I realize that makes zero sense, but it’s fun to guess:).
Re pregnancy cravings: I was really nauseous with both of my boys the first trimester, and with my oldest the smell of chick fil a was just the worst. Then with my younger son, all I wanted for several weeks were chick fil a chicken biscuits, which I’d never eaten before in my life, lol. Hormones work in funny ways!
He also has a sister! She’s the oldest of the three of them but lives in Asheville so we don’t see her as often as his brother. So that throws a wrench in your reasoning 😉
Your chick fil a story is so funny! We have one right next to the studio and I have definitely been tempted by chicken biscuits!
Totally does throw a wrench in my admittedly nonsensical logic. 🙂 Either way it’s so fun to guess! Enjoy the anatomy scan – it’s so exciting :).
And I actually know the chick fil a you’re talking about – we lived in the neighborhood of the studio back when I was pregnant the first time and just moved back, do we’re not far from the studio. Hoping that’ll make it easier to get there for class sometime, lol
Love these updates! I am guessing girl!
🙂 thanks!
I was all boobs when I was pregnant with my son, so I am guessing it’s a boy! Food cravings? NOTHING tasted good to me. The first meal I had after I had given birth, tasted SO GOOD. You know it is bad when you think Vegan hospital food is the bomb ?. So excited for you. Can definitely see baby bump growing. Looking good mama!
Oh wow, I didn’t know that there was vegan hospital food! That’s pretty cool. I’m SO grateful that food tastes good to me! 🙂
About the vegan hospital food. Should probably mention that I don’t live in the States and I had to request the meals when I booked my bed at the Maternity hospital we chose. Definitely not standard procedure ?.
I’m guessing boy as well, mostly because your pregnancy so far sounds just like my first one (I have 2 boys). With both I craved salty, savory stuff. With my first son I NEEDED to eat bacon everyday. Which of course my coworkers thought particularly hilarious considering I’m a dietitian. I also ate a lot of salsa, and now my son will literally eat salsa by the spoonful. With my second son nothing tasted good except salty, starchy foods. For the first trimester I had a strong aversion to oatmeal, which I had normally eaten everyday for breakfast for the previous 15 years! (Luckily, that aversion disappeared midway into the second trimester, so I’m back to my usual oatmeal habit)
Boy!! Only because you haven’t had any morning sickness (lucky!).
I am a few weeks behind you (13 weeks on Thurs!) and ran a marathon at 9 weeks. I too had never chaffed before and while I didn’t feel a thing during the race, when I stepped in the shower I had the chaffed in the same place! oh the burn! I have very similar symptoms as you. I haven’t been feeling any morning sickness and no aversions yet. So I’m curious what we will be having too! And also since our symptoms are similar if they will be the same gender!
Congrats! Your excitement is infectious! I’ve had a few kids and really love listening to the podcast The Birth Hour… it’s basically women telling their birth stories. It’s great to hear so many different perspectives and scenarios in a way that always feels gracious and empowering. I’d recommend it!
I think boy! I am so excited for you and Tanner. I know you will be an amazing mama to that sweet baby 🙂
I am so thrilled for you!! I am due with my third baby on May 7th (I think that’s a day before you)! May is the best time to have a sweet babe- my older two were actually born May 8th and May 9th. I am loving following along on your journey with you!! Congrats- and you are going to be the best mom! (And so glad you aren’t sick- it’s the worst ?) can’t wait to find out what you are having!!
So excited for you! I love following you on your pregnancy journey! Giving birth beats the runners high – hoping yours goes well. The whole journey changed me as a person and the way I viewed my body. Both times around, I didn’t like pregnancy- but it’s such a miracle I would do it again.
Yay I love these updates!! Crazy how quickly your body is changing – as someone who wants a baby one day I’m also secretly excited to “have” boobs for a little bit as I don’t have any now haha! Enjoy all the extra carbs! 🙂
Forgot my gender guess… I say girl even though it’s a 50/50 shot. I won an office pool once as I was the only one who said my boss was having a girl and everyone else thought boy based on symptoms/how she was carrying/old wife’s tales/etc! Haha!
Sweetest congrats to you! I wanted to chime in and say I had very similar experiences with both of my pregnancies – major nausea from weeks 5-13 and I have a boy and a girl! 🙂 When I was pregnant with my daughter though, I was much more emotional during than I was with my first pregnancy and I didn’t experience that surge of hormones until after the birth. So excited for you all!
I don’t have kids yet, but I’ve found myself listening to parenting/birth podcasts lately in anticipation of starting a family. Just wanted to throw out a second recommendation for The Birth Hour podcast, as well as The Longest Shortest Time. I’ve learned so much from both of these and would definitely recommend them!
Love hearing your updates! I guess boy 🙂
What fun! I love to see updates of pregnancies. Funny about your chest comment. I’m very small chested, but after my kids were born I was freaked out about having a chest! I actually didn’t like it, and I thought I would. As is back to normal now 🙂
Congratulations on the Baby! I’m so very happy for you and Tanner.
As to the sex, I’m thinking girl!
I had two daughters and never had any food aversions with my girls. With my son, I could not stand to smell most food cooking. I could eat most anything, just not stand to smell it cooking!
This I know to be true…whichever sex that baby is you will be overjoyed and totally in love.
Jen,
I was so happy to read about your good news a few posts back! Very exciting! I have been reading your blog since grad school in 2014, and I look forward to following your journey during this special time. I am at 36w and change with my first baby (girl!), and I can say that it has been a roller coaster but overall a beautiful journey thus far. Again, congrats Jen! 🙂 ~Anne
I guess boy… just a gut feeling.
Your grocery haul had me laughing out loud! I guess you better edit the answer to “Food Cravings: Nope” above!! 😉
You are SUCH a badass for running a half marathon in your first trimester. Go girl go! I’m guessing boy only because I have a 50% chance of being right 🙂

Congrats, it’s such an exciting time! I too lost interest in ice cream during my first pregnancy with my son. So sad! I just had a little girl 3 months ago and with the second pregnancy everything else was the same as the first but I loved ice cream! We didn’t know what we were having either time so we were shocked the second one was a girl since both pregnancies were so similar. So I’ll guess boy:)
Thinking it’s a boy!
I can’t wait to find out!
Congratulations! I’m only 6 weeks but will be following your posts closely for tips – especially as far as workouts as I am quite the gym rat & aspiring runner 🙂 One question the the kombucha you mentioned – I have read stuff that says you shouldn’t drink it? Then some articles say it’s fine. I never by the 21+ ones though. Did you ask your dr or anything to get the ok to drink it?
I read a ton about it too. A few years ago they took a bunch of the kombucha off the market to better regulate the alcohol content. These days any of it sold in the stores is less than a 0.5% alcohol content so I feel pretty comfortable with that. And on the bacteria front, I only buy brands that I am familiar with and know have stringent fermentation and bottling practices. I would never drink home brew or anything “sketchy” during pregnancy. I was drinking it almost daily before so my gut/system is pretty used to it.
It’s going to be so fun to watch your journey. I am due May 7th so we are at the same stage in pregnancy. This is my second baby but it is still very fun and exciting to see the baby develop and how my body changes.
Thanks Mattie! I love that we share such similar due dates. I’m sure it is still so excited with the second baby, especially as I have heard that each pregnancy is so different! Congrats to you! 🙂
