I’ve skipped out on writing weekend recaps for the last few weeks because there hasn’t been much to write about! Honestly, weekends feel pretty much the same these days as every other day since we’re in the newborn stage but I’ve received a few requests for “new day in the life” style posts so I snapped some photos to document our (slow!) weekend.
Finn and I spent the majority of the weekend solo because Tanner was leading the first weekend of Y2’s summer 200-hour yoga teacher training. We didn’t see much of him due to this. Obviously, I’m sitting this training out as I have my hands full with Finn!
FRIDAY
As I mentioned in my fourth trimester three weeks pospartum post, we took our first trip to the mall on Friday afternoon. We stopped in Lululemon and Baby Gap so that Finn and I could both get some new outfits!
Back at home we went for a walk and then both of us had shower/bath time and then settled in for dinner.
I had an Organic Spinach and Feta frozen pizza from ALDI (dipped in ranch…of course!) and a side salad.
We wrapped up the night by starting season 7 of Scandal on Netflix. I was SO excited to see that it was available and I’m happy to have Olivia Pope back in my life. This season is INTENSE! I’m so sad it’s the last one.
SATURDAY
Finn woke up in a great mood so I decided to chance a trip to the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market. I hadn’t been in so long!!!
Finn slept through the outing and I took my time browsing through the various booths and enjoying doing something that is a normal part of my Saturday routine. The only downside was that our post-10 a.m. arrival meant that a lot of my favorite famers were wiped out of the good stuff but we still managed some great finds. FYI…here is a post about my favorite farmers at the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market. It can be a little overwhelming to navigate at first.
I also stopped by Suarez Bakery and got an apple fritter and a piece of carrot cake. I ate the apple fritter immediately as a “second breakfast” and have been stealing bites of the cake out of the fridge here and there for the last couple of days.
I arrived back at home around noon just as Finn was waking up and starting to have a hunger meltdown. We immediately got to feeding and he was happy again.
I unloaded my farmers market finds – two types of kale for kale salads this week, sweet potatoes, the first of this season’s tomatoes, the first of this season’s peaches, a cucumber, local honey and some eggs. We’ll see how the tomatoes and peaches are…it’s early yet!
We were home by noon and the rest of the day stretched out rather long in front of us. I did a lot of straightening up, laundry, vacuuming and things around the house between feedings.
We finally got out for a walk around 7 p.m. when it cooled down enough to be manageable for the dogs and Finn. FYI, I posted a few dog walking tips on Instagram. It’s been a learning curve to add the stroller into my daily dog walks but we’re figuring it out and the girls are doing a great job.
I made a really yummy salad for dinner using leftovers from the fridge. This is a super greens mix topped with a quinoa blend, salmon, cashews, dried cranberries and avocado. It was dressed with a lemon tahini dressing. I loved this salad and if you haven’t tried cashews on your salads you must…so good!
More Scandal on Saturday night. 😉
SUNDAY
Sunday started off slowly. We all slept until about 9:30. It’s amazing that I can sleep until 8:30 or 9 most mornings and still be SO tired come the end of the day…even though all I’m really doing is sitting around. Sleep is broken but I do get 7-8 hours most nights.
After I got Finn fed (he woke up ready to eat!), I made this breakfast for myself. Two eggs scrambled in Kerrygold butter, a slice of Great Harvest cinnamon bread with butter and fresh cherries and strawberries. A friend dropped off a loaf of this bread and I forgot how good it is. It tastes like a cinnamon roll in bread form!
Dorie texted around noon and invited me to the pool. I was hesitant because it was hot but decided to try it because I needed to get out of the house. We created quite the little shade setup for Finn and he loved it. He napped the whole time.
How cute is this little guy!? Living the good life! Of course I couldn’t get in the water quite yet but it was nice to sit and chat with my friends.
We stayed for about an hour and a half and then headed home to meet a friend who was stopping by with dinner. She has a four month old so we had tons to talk about when it came to all things baby. We chatted for about an hour and a half and then I went out for a walk after she left.
She brought dinner from YAFO so I couldn’t wait to dig into that after getting myself showered and Finn bathed after our walk. I had to eat this one-handed as Finn decided he was hungry too while I was eating! 🙂
The night ended again with…you guessed it…Scandal on the couch! Finn wanted to eat a lot last night but I was fine with him getting his belly full before bed because he slept from 11 p.m. – 4 a.m. CUE ANGELS SINGING! IT WAS AMAZING!
And that’s all! Quite a different weekend but a good one. <3
Tell me about all of the fun and exciting things you did over the weekend!
Love your day in the life posts– I’m happy they are back! Yay for 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep!!
Thanks Katherine…and the sleep was life changing!
Loved this post, Jen! Finn is so adorable!
Thank you Michelle!
I love your food posts — so yummy!
Saturday I spent some one-on-one time with one of my twin sons in the morning (he had been needing this lately, for a variety of reasons) and then took my sons to play laser tag with friends in the afternoon. Sunday I’d planned to take my sons to another play date with friends we hadn’t seen in months, but instead I ended up spending 5 hours or so at the emergency vet with our geriatric golden retriever. 🙁
I can imagine that finding that one-on-one balance with twins must be challenging sometimes. I’ve never played laser tag before!
My heart goes out to you over the vet visit. I sincerely hope your pup is okay. <3
Love these post! Exciting for me was… going to trader joes & shopping for Maternity clothes! Lol.
Shopping for maternity clothes is fun! 🙂 And I always love a Trader Joe’s trip. I need to take Finn for his first one soon!
You are doing an amazing job! When my 7 month old was a newborn, I (like you) took him EVERYWHERE. I had the mindset that we would try it & if he melted down I would leave. I was usually pleasantly surprised at how well he did. I once took him to a midday movie! I made sure no one else had bought a ticket & we saw ladybird! He slept/ate through the whole thing….basically exactly what he would have done at home! You guys should try it!
Thanks Rachel! I’m doing the best I can and we’re finding our way together! 🙂 Thanks for the movie suggestion. I’ll definitely keep that in mind for these hot summer days!
He is living the life! That is an adorable shot of him stretched on on the lounger by the pool. He is so sooo cute!! Loving these posts as I am due in October and enjoy learning from your experiences and reading other people’s comments. I feel like I now have a better idea of what to expect. SO many unknowns with pregnancy and expecting your first! Thanks Jen for sharing all the different parts of this process. It’s very helpful and interesting.
I rarely chime in though I read often and just want to say you’re doing a wonderful job!! ❤️ It’s definitely an adjustment going from typical life to the newborn stage – lots of alone time! But what I highly recommend is finding a local new moms group to join. I found mine at my local hospital where I gave birth and it lead me to the most wonderful group of mom friends that I could ever have imagined. I know you have a lovely group of friends already but it can be soooo comforting to have a group of mom friends to hang out with who are going through the same stages and challenges as you are. Just a thought! ?
Isn’t the first stretch of sleep over 2-3 hrs amazing? I still remember feeling like a new person the first time my kids did that as newborns.
Your “new normal” will shift and change as Finn does, and sometimes it’s lonely for sure. You seem like you’re doing as good a job as you can to engage in self-care in seeing friends and getting out. Keep taking care of yourself as well as you take care of Finn!
Yes! It was life changing! I’m trying not to get too attached to it as I’m sure it can change in an instant! 🙂
Thank you for sharing your “new weekend”! All the pictures are SO sweet and I’m glad it’s all going as well as it can as everyone adjusts – including the Goldens 🙂
You are so welcome. We are all finding our way!
My friend’s one month old somehow fell off a pool chair when she had placed him like that. Babies move around a lot more than expected! That’s why they say never leave a baby on the changing table, even to go grab something…the wiggling can cause them to move and they could fall. Not trying to be critical at all here!! My friend’s son was okay, lots of blood and he needed stitches above his eye (at almost 6 he still has the scar).
Oh my gosh, thanks for the reminder! I sat on the edge of the chair watching him most of the time but definitely good to keep in mind, especially as he wiggles more and more. I am so sorry to hear about your friend’s son. That is terrible. I’m glad he’s okay.
Finn is so cute! Makes me miss those baby snuggles. Get a stroller fan! Only $15-20 on Amazon and I think it helps give them some circulation. I loved having one since it’s so humid and hot and I didn’t feel so bad when going for walks, etc.
Perfect, I am going to order one today!
This is my first time commenting on your blog but I’ve followd along all through your pregnancy and for a long time before and I just wanted to tell you – you’re doing a great job. I had a TOUGH time adjusting to my first baby. Not depressed or anything but really struggling with how much my life had changed. I was so used to my independence and being busy all the time…and suddenly I don’t even have time to empty the dishwasher. I remember those long days stretching ahead and dreading it, even though I loved my daughter with all my heart. Just wanted to give you a big high five and let you know you’re not alone in feeling like that. And, if it makes you feel any better or if you’re planning on having any more kids, making the adjustment from 1 to 2 kids was WAY easier than from 0 to 1. At least for me anyway!! You’re doing an amazing job, keep up the good work!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and for following along. I appreciate the encouragement and you sharing that you had a tough time adjusting. It’s nice not to feel alone in the transition and to know that other women have felt the same way. And awesome to hear that on 1 to 2, it makes sense to me!
Glad you are getting out! That baby tent is amazing. :0
I’ve been thinking about starting Scandal too.
You have to start Scandal! It’s SO GOOD!
My son was born in Hawaii and the beach was my happy place so I bought a little tent–made just for babies–sun safe and everything!
