I’ve cried some tears today. First over my sweet boy getting shots for the first time. Second over the kindness of other women…this one deserves a post all of its own. Coming soon.
Finn has been sleeping on me in the Ergo all afternoon. He’s breaking my heart! Everyone who told me that having a child is like having your heart walking around outside of your body was so very right.
I’m going to lighten up the content today with some recent eats. Enjoy.
BREAKFAST
Scrambled eggs, avocado toast on homemade bread and cherries.
Plain yogurt, honey, bananas, granola, blueberries, strawberries and peanut butter.
Smoothie with spinach, bananas, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, a medjool date, fish oil, collagen powder, peanut butter and almond milk.
LUNCH
This was a kale salad kit from Publix to which I added strawberries, blueberries, turkey and avocado.
Turkey, avocado and cheese and watermelon.
The other half of the kale salad with leftover salmon and half and avocado.
Turkey sandwich with avocado, tomato and arugula on an Ozery OneBun. I ran into a friend of mine while I was shopping at Whole Foods and spotted these sandwich thins in her cart. She told me they were good so I decided to give them a try. I like them a lot and it’s been a nice change from regular bread.
DINNER
Southwestern shrimp taco salad. My parents made this for dinner one night while I was visiting and it’s so good! I actually have the recipe on my blog.
Baked salmon with steamed rice and sauteed squash.
Pasta with bolognese sauce. My dad cooked the sauce and let it simmer all afternoon and it was delicious.
Chicken leg/thigh from a rotisserie that I got at Whole Foods along with roasted broccoli, potatoes and mushrooms. I ate this two nights in a row when I got back from Florida.
ETC
I’m like give me all the ice cream right now. I’ve been eating it every night. This was Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Salty Carmel.
And when I was in Florida I ate these Haagen-Dazs flavors every night. The trio is just okay, the caramel cone is where it’s at. I love it!
Random related note…I was talking to my mom about how all the ice cream shops closed when build-your-own froyo got so popular. Now most of the froyo places are out of business and ice cream is having its day again. We actually have a Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams opening in Charlotte in August! I fully admit that I was on the froyo bandwagon when it was at the prime of its popularity but ice cream is definitely better in my book…there is no comparison. 🙂
If you had to pick…ice cream or froyo?
Ice cream, NO CONTEST! I have froyo every once in a while, but if there is ice cream around, I will always choose that.
I’ve been eating a lot of ice cream lately too. It’s a summer thing! I just bought a pack of chipwiches, which I haven’t had since I was a kid and they are delish.
My heart breaks for you for the personal issues you’re reading with. I don’t you, or him, and I don’t have a child (and I get that that changes EVERYTHING) but let me tell you that as a woman in her late forties who has suffered more than my share of difficulty and challenges in life (some of which are very, very similar), it’s the big picture we have such a hard time seeing when mired in a current heartache. And that’s normal, it’s understandable, it’s part of the human condition. But try, if you can, to step outside today and think of future. You AND Finn will be better off and you will be the strong and resilient woman (that you know you are in your heart), and you will, in fact, be even stronger and better for what you’ve learned. You have a new focus that will take you away from things that have held you down in the past, and you will grow and become an even more incredible woman capable of awesome things. And this I can promise you: someday you will look back and shake your head and think, oh my, I still had so far to go back then. But it will be good, and affirming, because it will remind you that we are always learning and struggling and growing and becoming better human beings. You and Finn will be FINE, better than fine, and he will love the strong mama he has for all you have endured and surpassed and become. He will be proud of you and everything you accomplished. And you will remember that your friends and family will carry you through the most unbelievable challenges. And the other side is so much brighter, Jen. I can’t wait until you are there, and see that. Hugs to you and your sweet boy. You’ll be be FINE. Trust me.
Jeni’s ice cream is amazing! The best part is going in store to try different flavor combinations. I got hooked on Jeni’s ten years ago when they had one location just a couple miles away from my house. I moved to a state where I can only get it in the grocery store and I miss going to the scoop shop to get a cup with two flavors so much! It is the best.
Ice cream 1000000%! And you’re getting a Jeni’s?! I am so jealous! That is my go-to online order for friends when they are dealing with the crappy stuff life throws at you because who doesn’t feel better when they have ice cream delivered to their door 🙂 I’ve got Talenti in my freezer that I am going to have after dinner tonight 😉
Ice cream! I’ve been on a major ice cream kick since my baby boy was born 3 weeks ago. I thought cravings were supposed to stop after pregnancy!! Lol
I also just want to say that I admire your strength and courage during this time! Thank you for sharing and being vulnerable with your readers; you’re an inspiration!
You are one brave Mom! To see your baby have his first shots is heart wrenching. It’s so difficult to see them cry in pain ?. Poor sweet Finn! And poor sweet you!
Ice cream, girl!
Ice cream! For me, it’s a perfect example of something being filling and satisfying (v. froyo, which is light enough that it doesn’t feel as filling…i.e. I tend to eat way more of it!). Oh, but then there’s gelato, too…which I like even more than ice cream. (Hello, Talenti!)
Also, yes to the sandwich thins! I started eating those earlier this year, and they have been a satisfying option for my packed lunches.
No doubt–ice cream all the way. Nothing compares to it in any way.
My heart is with you in all your personal struggles. I am so sorry for all that you are going through. You are doing a wonderful job with Finn!!
Aw, poor babe (and mama!). But so grateful we can protect kids with vaccines!
All those eats look amazing. Is your dad using a specific Bolognese recipe or does he just play it by ear with ingredients on hand? That’s one of my favorite foods. I’m also definitely team ice cream – but the topping bars at froyo places are fun! Another fun summer tradition in our family is frozen buttermilk with crushed pineapple. Sounds gross, but it just tastes like pineapple frozen yogurt! My mom and grandma have been making it for us since I was a kid.
No pics of THE Finn today?
Our doctor offered this little nerve blocker thing that they place around the area for the shot (it was u-shaped with little raised bumps) and whether it was psychological for me or not, I swear my baby didn’t cry while getting shots when they used it. Maybe your practice has it?!
Ooh, tough question! I like both froyo and ice cream but I probably eat more real ice cream now than I did a few years ago. My husband and I have been on a Ben and Jerry’s kick lately, Chubby Hubby and The Tonight Dough are both currently in the freezer.
If I want froyo, I usually go for the tart stuff, like Pinkberry. Yum!
Ice cream! Agreed, shot days are the worst. It was the first time I saw real tears in his eyes and it was so sad. Some tips my friends gave me for next time is to pre-medicate with Tylenol.
ICE CREAM FOR THE WIN!! As much fun as it is to make your own froyo creation with lots of fun toppings…NOTHING beats the real thing!!
I am always so inspired by your Recent Eats. They’re so colorful and varied and delicious-looking. I’ve pinned so many over the years and tried to replicate them! 🙂
