Finn is five months old today and I’m having all the feels. I am going to write a more in-depth post about motherhood soon…I think for five months but maybe I’ll hold off until six. I have so much to say about this incredible journey that I’m on with Finn. <3
Today I have a day in the life at 5 months. It’s important to note that we are RARELY this on the go during the day but we made it work. I’m lucky that Finn is a pretty go with the flow little dude. We usually stick closer to home with either one outing in the car or just a walk around the neighborhood to get us out of the house. It was unusual to have multiple appointments/errands to do in one day. As a contrast to yesterday, today (the day I’m writing this), I was in my PJs until 12:30 p.m. and our outing for the day was to drop dinner off for a friend at 1:30 and then meet another friend at the park for a walk at 2 p.m. That was it!
A DAY IN THE LIFE AT 5 MONTHS
Sometime in the middle of the night: I feed Finn. I don’t even look at the clock anymore.
5:30 a.m. – Finn wants to eat again and I can’t go back to sleep. I end up doing stuff on my phone until a little after 7 when he wakes up for the day. Finn is the cutest thing EVER in the mornings and it’s one of my favorite times of the whole day. He is so smiley.
7:30 a.m. – after feeding Finn in bed and then a diaper change, I come downstairs to make myself coffee and breakfast and feed the girls their breakfast. I eat it while playing with Finn and watching Good Morning America.
8:30 a.m. – I get showered and dressed and get Finn dressed for the day. I have an appointment out of the house at 9:30 a.m. I “top him off” at 9 a.m. so he won’t get hungry in the middle of the appointment.
9:30 a.m. – my appointment is with the dermatologist for a head-to-toe skin check. I’ve never had one before and I figured it was a good time to start. We also talked about some patchy dry spots that I have. She said they’re psoriasis-like and not uncommon after pregnancy due to estrogen levels. She made mention of reducing or eliminating gluten and I was like “lalalalalalala nope.” I am going back in a couple of weeks to have two hemangiomas lasered off. She said those are also common to pop up during pregnancy.
My skin check was all-clear, and for that I was thankful. She gave me a great reminder to be sure to put sunscreen on my ears, which I am guilty of forgetting.
10:15 a.m. – Finn and I are back in the car and he falls asleep on the way to our next errand. He usually goes down for his morning nap around 9:30 so I was pushing it with the appointment.
10:30 a.m. – we arrive at the mall. I wandered through Anthroplogie to get a gift for a friend. I loved this dish towel that I spotted while I was in there. I like Anthropologie for gifts…and my browse through the store confirmed that I have NO CLUE what is in style right now.
11 a.m. – second stop was Lululemon because I had received an email the evening prior that they have now made my beloved Align Pants into joggers. This is the type of fashion that I can get behind! I did a quick scan of the sale rack and grabbed the Align Joggers to try on.
It’s also time for Finn to eat again so I do a quick dressing room nursing session. He’s a super efficient and quick eater these days.
I received so many questions about the Align Joggers on Instagram. Yes, they are super comfy! And they run true to your normal Lululemon size. I also got a dark olive run swiftly long-sleeve (my fave), a red flow Y bra and the pink-ish hoodie that you see. Those three items were on sale. Glad I planned on buying the jacket because Finn spit up all over it after he ate.
11:30 a.m. – we stop by the library to return a book. It was a zoo due to early voting. While there I also pick up a copy of the story time schedule. They do one for infants and apparently it’s very popular. We’ll check it out soon!
Noon – back at home I open a box of cheese crackers to snack on while figuring out what I want to make for lunch. I pull out everything to make a salad and then make a sandwich instead.
Mayo, mustard, avocado, turkey, bread and butter pickles and cheddar cheese on Dave’s Killer Good Seed Bread.
12:45 p.m. – we take off for a 1 p.m. appointment with my therapist. Finn usually comes with me to these appointments. I feed him again at the beginning of the session and then he hangs out and plays for the rest. It is a very helpful and very well-timed session.
2:15 p.m. – as soon as we get in the car Finn is lights out and sleeps for the next hour and a half. I run into Harris Teeter and ALDI to do some grocery shopping for a meal that I am taking friends and a dinner party I am hosting later this week.
4 p.m. – back at home Finn is awake and ready to rock and roll. I get the groceries unloaded, feed him and start prepping the meal that I am taking my friends. Finn has just started enjoying this activity gym in the last week or so.
While I am cooking Finn is in the activity gym, on the floor and in his chair. I also hold him on and off. It’s quite the experience to get things done when he’s awake!
5:30 p.m. – we go for a walk with the dogs and chat on the phone with my mom and Dorie.
7 p.m. – I feed Finn and chat with my grandmother.
7:30 p.m. – dinner is some of the soup that I made for my friends. It’s this recipe from Oh She Glows. I’ve made it three times now and it’s really good! (They are vegetarians and it’s getting chilly in Charlotte so I thought a pot of soup would be the perfect thing!)
8 p.m. – Finn and I both have bath/shower time and get into PJs. I do a quick sweep of the house to switch over laundry, straighten up and do some dishes and then take my laptop upstairs.
8:30 p.m. – I get Finn down and finally open my laptop to get some work done for the first time all day. I write a blog post and answer a bunch of emails with Gilmore Girls on in the background. I also eat a bowl of cookies and cream ice cream.
10:45 p.m. – I close down my laptop and get my Kindle to read Educated. I also dream feed Finn.
11:15 p.m. – my eyes are closing and it’s time to sleep!
Do you get regular skin checks? Did you have any weird skin stuff pop up during pregnancy/new motherhood?
Current favorite Lululemon items? Have you tried the Align Joggers?

I’m getting my first skin check in a couple weeks… eek! I’ve been putting it off for quite a while and I’m a little nervous. My skin didn’t change much with my first pregnancy but I’m 15 weeks along with my second and I’m breaking out like crazy and there’s a mole right at my hairline on my forehead that I’ve noticed getting bigger. Wish me luck! ??
First, congrats to you on your second pregnancy! Second, I’m so glad you are getting a skin check. I will say prayers that all is well!
Does Finn just take two naps per day?
Depends on the day! Today he took like 5, haha. We are still working on a more consistent schedule. I would say two longer naps and one or two cat naps is normal. I’ve noticed that he is starting to go down earlier at night too and sleep longer stretches. I think we are getting closer to a schedule!
I love the happy mornings. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we all woke up as happy as babies? Can’t believe Finn is only 1.5 months younger than Camryn. Jealous of his naps while you are out, Cam is a horrible sleeper while we do things out.
What a nice day! I’m so worried how I’m going to figure out how to be mobile with the twins by myself– I guess I’ll figure it out though.
YES- I have had all sort of weird, annoying things pop up. Not pleasant at all!
Have a great weekend!
i actually had psoriasis/eczema like patches pop up and my doctor tested me for celiac and i had it. so i didnt have really bad stomach issues like some but had more skin/hair/nails/etc issues that was my big alert. So its not for nothing they mentioned the gluten. now im gfree and no skin issues at all.
I have a 4 month old and yes getting things done is a challenge!!
Yes I get regular skin checks, not weird skin things but my hair!! It falls out so much in the shower and drying it!
Also, I have found the best yoga/workout pants 90 degrees by reflex $20 or so on amazon!
Does Finn still sleep in your room? Do not want to sound preachy at all or give you unsolicited advice but our pediatrician told us that our son would start sleeping through the night if we got him out of our room. We switched him at 5 mos old and he slept 12 hours the first now and now at almost 2 he has not looked back. I was dying from 5 mos of broken up sleep. Just some food for thought! You are doing a great job?
Should have added that i breastfed as well and the doctor basically said he could smell me all night!!
I laughed at “lalalala nope” ! I’m with ya – bread is life 🙂
I stopped at the mall yesterday for the first time in… months? over a year? I don’t even remember. And I had the same feeling of cluelessness in regards to what is currently in style. Most of the items I looked at, I wasn’t even sure how I should wear them, or what kind of shoes would look right. Which is why I’m glad I can wear yoga pants/athletic wear most of the time. I haven’t tried the align jogger, but I’ve been looking for a pant like it. As for a skin check, I haven’t had one in years even though I know I should. Thanks for the reminder to make the appointment. 🙂
Did Finn go through the 4 month sleep regression? We’re really struggling over here and I’d love to hear your experience. Related: what are your thoughts on sleep training?
We have to share a room with our little one because we live in a tiny apartment!
Is the skin check totally naked or you wear your underware? I feel like I need to do this. I have some patches of dryness that are not going away and I am wondering now reading the comments if it could be a sign of something more.
I am jealous you can “top him off.” I would try that with my daughter and she was like “nope not happening.” Sigh. I also did the dream feed for a long time!
I have to get skin checks every year, and my doctors have always had me leave on underwear – definitely bottoms, sometimes a bra but it depends on the doctor. Mine just ask if there’s anything under your underwear that they need to check. And they give you that lovely paper gown, which they move around as needed so you’re not just sitting there mostly-naked. Hope that helps!
Oooohh! I recenrly read Educated….it is soooo interesting and honestly a bit mind blowing to me. Enjoy!
