I know this weekend is all about the fourth but today we’ve been celebrating a very special fifth! It’s Sullie’s FIFTH birthday! I bet you’re thinking, “another birthday!?” Brandon, Sullie and I have birthdays within three weeks of each other!
If you’re a regular reader PBR, you know that Sullie is basically our dog child. We got her when we had just moved to Birmingham for Brandon to attend law school. We planned on waiting until second semester so that Brandon could get settled into school but then we made the mistake of starting to look “just to see what was out there.” The next thing we knew, we were coming home with a 10-week old golden retriever puppy!
We feel so lucky to have such an amazing pup. Seriously, we ask each other all the time if she could possibly be any sweeter. Sullie is so affectionate, obedient, tolerant, friendly, loyal and just ridiculously cute. I could go on and on but instead I’ll just share some pictures from birthdays over the year since I’m an insane loving dog mom and have pretty much documented her whole life.
Day One
First birthday – complete with hats and a cake.
Clearly, she’s thrilled to wear this hat! ๐
Second birthday, a little unsure of the cake this year!
(Third birthday – I can’t find a photo. I fail.
We were in the middle of moving from Birmingham to Charlotte and life was crazy!)
Fourth birthday!
And finally, five years old today!
Begging for the peanut butter banana Kong that I made for her!
Am I the only crazy pet parent out there? Please tell me that someone else bakes for their dog and makes them wear birthday hats! ๐
Oh, I know a family that spells “dog” around their dachshund so they won’t insult her—and she has pearls, rhinestones, a bad-ass leather choker, sweaters, etc etc etc. Honestly, if Sullie is clear that she’s a dog and *not* human, you’re not over-the-top yet! ๐
wow, that’s is a little over-the-top! thanks for sharing! ๐
Happy birthday Sullie!
I have indeed made our Siberian husky Denali wear a hat on his birthday! I even made him dog friendly cupcakes. I love the yearly photos – such a great idea.
yay for someone else baking for their pet! i love siberian huskies. so pretty!
I am a craaazy dog mom too! My dog just had his first birthday and I threw him a party! No joke- at a dog-friendly bar, complete with hats for the dogs goody bags and dog cake! Too much fun:)
that is AWESOME!!!!!
Yes, my yorkie Rocky turned 11 this past year and he always has a little birthday celebration!
11 is something to celebrate!!!!
so sweet! I LOVE goldens. Happy birthday to Sullie! ๐
they are the BEST dogs!
Happy Birthday Sullie! ๐ My dog Charlie is 3, and we’ve totally celebrated his birthdays each year. He was a rescue puppy so we picked a day that is likely very close to his real birthday and yup, I make him dress up (usually put on a tie – HA.) for pictures, and give him a new toy and a special yummy treat. If being a crazy doglady is wrong, I don’t wanna be right!
mary-heather – i think it is so sweet that you picked a birthday for your rescue pup. LOVE the tie idea! and how fun is it to give them new toys? they get so ridiculously excited!
Your dog looks EXACTLY like mine ๐
awesome!!! cutest dogs ever!
I’m pretty sure you know that I’m a crazy dog mom already ๐ I made Clyde a PB cake for his first birthday ๐ Um, baby Sullie is SO CUTE!! Happy Birthday to Sullie!
brittney – i know clyde is right up there with sullie on dog family member status! ๐
So sweet Jen! You’re such a great fur mom! We most definitely celebrate our pup’s birthdays. They are full-fledged members of the family after all.
totally!
I never tire of seeing pictures of Sullie, happy birthday gorgeous girl!
I don’t know when my cats birthdays are as they are both rescue cats, but I celebrate their gotcha day with them and give them fresh shrimp, or prawns or some other treats. Boyfriend thinks I’m insane, I couldn’t care less ๐
sullie says thank you!
i think your cat treats sound TOTALLY acceptable!
I love that you have pictures from (almost) all of Sullie’s birthdays- so sweet! Happy birthday to a beautiful pup!!
You are not alone! I always say me and my husband are “those” people with “that” dog! He’s our child and we totally treat him like a baby.
Have a happy birthday Sullie!!!!
Aw, your puppy is just too adorable!
When it’s the cat’s birthdays my parents just give them so extra treats and maybe some cat nip. They’re so easy to please. ๐
love cats on cat nip! so fun to watch!
oh my gosh cutestttt dog ever!!!!!!!
and i always celebrate my dog’s bdays! you have too!!
Fellow crazy pet parent here ๐ I totally bake our dogs birthday cakes and they usually get a special “dinner” as well, also on holidays and sometimes just because ๐ I also make homemade treats for them…any excuse to bake is good and I like that I know exactly what I put into them! Love the idea with the birthday photos, I haven’t been doing that until now.Must remember ๐
I don’t even think it’s that crazy- as long as people remember that their dogs are dogs and fulfill their needs as dogs first and then some and not try to turn them into little people, which they are not. That, I find really sad.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEAUTIFUL SULLIE!!!
nathalie – i also make sullie special dinners from time to time. a few weeks ago she was having some stomach issues so i made her a whole batch of chicken breasts and brown rice for the week.
i do like being able to see her change over the years! and i agree, i just love having her cute face around to bring joy to our lives!
You are so right! Just seeing their little faces and wagging tails in the morning sets me up for a great day! So I feel the least I can do is spoil them a little bit, in a good way, to give something back.
So sweet of you to prep chicken& brown rice for Sullie when she had a funny tummy. Our boy, Teddy, has tummy issues from time to time and I also make him chicken or scrambled eggs with brown rice and some steamed veggies ๐
Sullie is so adorable! Happy Birthday to the pup! We had golden retrievers when I was growing up and they were always the sweetest family pets. My dog is definitely my baby, so I know exactly how you feel!
it’s crazy to me how sweet and family-focused they are! amazing dogs!
OMG soooo cute! You know I’m a crazy dog mama too. We’re already planning Nati’s 9th bday celebration which is in a few weeks. Happy birthday to miss Sullie!
yes, i actually thought of you when i wrote this. i knew you wouldn’t call me crazy! ๐
Cutest little puppy ever!!! Happy Birthday Sullie ๐
Too cute and your definitely not alone. We threw our pups a birthday party at the Canine Cafe. 7 of their closest 4-legged pals and 16 adults were in attendence complete with doggie beer and adult beverages. ๐
YES! ๐
Sounds like my kind of party!
Aww happy birthday Sullie! That puppy picture is so cute. My hubby and I discuss all the time if we could have picked a better dog. Love her so much. I love that y’all celebrate all her birthdays…. too fun!
So adorable! Abby has had a birthday party with cake pretty much every year. For her 1st birthday, she had a hat too and even a candle on her cake – which she almost set herself on fire while we tried to take pictures and she tried to eat the cake! It was sooo funny!
hahahaha – cute story!
Love Sullie. We have a 5 yr old Golden, named Sophee. We adore her.
Neat that u teach so many fitness classes. Someday, I would love to try the hot yoga and Bodypump.
shelly – thanks for the comment! goldens are the best! ๐
