I am winding down on this Friday night on my grandmother’s couch in Florida.
WE MADE IT TO FLORIDA!
Me and my little travel buddy flew out of Charlotte early Thursday afternoon and arrived in Fort Walton Beach right around 2p thanks to the change to Central time.
Short flights with Finn are a breeze these days. They still require allllllllll the snacks but he’s content to play games or watch shows on his tablet (headphones here). I can actually read a book or work on my phone. I’ve found short flights a great time to do things that don’t require wifi like editing photos and videos and organizing my photo library.
I thought this day would never come during the flights we took in the 12 month to 3 year range when I was mostly a human jungle gym, haha. Throw back to a flight at 15 months when Finn had his eyes set on all the buttons he could push. One thing I do miss about this is being able to fly with a lap child ticket! 🙂
My mom picked us up from the airport and it was great to get home and find my dad doing so much better than when I saw him last week! He’s been going on short walks about three times a day and walking without a walker in the last couple of days. He is still moving slowly, tires easily and has a good bit of pain due to his sternum healing and the overall stress of the surgeries on his body but headed in the right direction for sure.
And of course Finn was thrilled to be reunited with Mema! I had a long-time reader reach out on Instagram and request I do a Q&A style interview post with Mema while I’m in Florida this week and I think that sounds like a lot of fun. If you have any questions for her, let me know in the comments below or shoot me an email!
I have a few Friday favorites to round out this post with.
FRESH VANS
I prefer to travel in comfortable, closed-toed shoes. I recently ordered a fresh pair of white Vans Old Skool Platforms and have worn them for all of my recent flights and I wore them almost every day in the hospital. They go with everything and are easy to wear all day.
SUNSKI SUNGLASSES
I picked up a pair of Sunski sunglasses at an outdoor outfitter earlier this summer. I was unfamiliar with the brand but instantly drawn to the lightweight, stylish frames and the reasonable price point. I chose the Madrona polarized sunglasses and learned that Sunski is an independent sunglasses brand out of San Fransisco. They offer sustainable design with recycled frames and a forever warranty to fix or replace broken shades.
I would compare the lightweight comfort of these Sunski glasses to my Goodrs. Highly recommend!
Unrelated but I am trying to embrace wearing my hair in its natural wavy/curly state this summer. No blowout my hair gets can withstand the Florida humidity. I struggle with styling my hair when I wear it like this (especially second day or if I pull it back for a workout) but I think I’ve found some strategies that work for me. I’m all ears if you have a similar natural hair type.
BURTS BEES BABY HALLOWEEN FAMILY JAMMIES
I realize that it’s only August 5 but stay with me here while I talk about Halloween pajamas because the time to order is now. I am partnering with Burts Bees Baby over on Instagram to promote their matching holiday FamJams for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah. They offer sizes ranging from newborn to adult men’s and women’s…along with matching bandanas for furry family members.
FamJams are Burts Bees Baby’s most popular product line and they sell out quickly every year. If I am being honest, I am typically not the type of person to be think ahead and order Halloween pajamas two months in advance. I would 100% miss out on all of this cuteness were I not actively participating in a partnership with the brand.
If you’d like to order Halloween or holiday FamJams for your family, use code jen_pbrunner20 at checkout for 20% off your order.
Lastly, I have to tell you that I am super impressed by how soft the 100% GOTs certified organic cotton is and every time I wash the PJs, they get even softer.
THE TRIAD GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUE NEEDS HELP
The rescue that I got Benji from recently took in an influx of young dogs into their program. They are in desperate need of fosters and adopters. Fosters need to be in the NC Triad to Charlotte area and adopters can be anywhere in the country. If you are interested in fostering or adopting, please visit their website and complete an application. Please note that all of these dogs are not active on the website for adoption at this time but will be.
That’s all I’ve got in me for today. Have a great weekend friends. xo
Your hair looks beautiful curly! I’d ask your grandmother if she’d have any life advice. She seems like such a wise lady so I’m sure she’s got some good words of wisdom!
Hi Jen, I’m so glad you parents seem to be doing well! As for wavy or curly hair, I’ve always struggled with second day hair. A good leave-in spray conditioner helps to refresh, or sometimes I’ll quickly jump into the shower to wet + condition my hair, then put in my styling cream and let it air dry. Overall though, I find that the less I try to style it, and just let it be what it is on a given day, the better it turns out. When all else fails, a ponytail or bun to the rescue. I hope that helps! Your waves are gorgeous!
Jen, happy your dad is doing better and you’re spending time with your family! Glad you mentioned your sunglasses, they along with your hair look great! I have curly hair and it was in a ponytail while on our vacation in FL! I’m pretty low maintenance, I use TIGI Curls Rock cream on wet hair and air dry. The more I leave it alone the better the curls look. A stylist who knows how to cut curly hair is so important! If you have someone please share, I live in South Charlotte! Grandparents are the best and I miss mine so much! I would love to hear about your grandma’s advice on cooking, raising kids, how to deal with stressful times. I bet she has good tips!
I have naturally wavy hair similar to yours. I’m a working mom of two so my routine is suuuuppoer low maintenance. When my hair is wet I break it into 1-2 inch sections and twist with my fingers into spiral columns. Then just let it dry naturally. Twice a week I use a light styling product before twisting but I find the twisting in general helps define the curl and lessens the frizz. You can retwist when dry or just do a light mist with a spray bottle between washings if you are losing the waves or getting frizzy. Hope that helps! Can’t imagine dealing with blowouts! Your natural waves are lovely!
I don’t have curly hair, but my BFF does. She says the longer she leaves it curly rather than straightening it, the better it keeps looking. Apparently straightening it sets back her progress on making her curls look good. I don’t understand that, but she swears it’s true. She also says use a person who cuts hair, which is done differently. And use products made for curly hair. She is an avid runner who lives in the south but doesn’t use regular shampoo.
No advice on styling but I ADORE your naturally curly hair! You are glowing!
And I’d love to know if your grandmother has any advice on dating/love/relationships. Can’t wait for that!
We are about to do our first flight with our two kids, who have been nowhere because of the pandemic. It will be about 5 1/2 hours from Portland to Maui. For our just-turned 3-year-old we are going to lean in hard to the tablet and snacks, plus a few other toys. For our baby, who will have just hit 12 months a few days before, I am expecting a nightmare 🙂 He does not like to be confined or even sitting on laps for any period of time, so I am trying to accept that we are going to be those people who are horrifying the plane with a fussy baby. Any advice would be greatly appeciated!
As for the wavy hair, squish to condish is probably the most important thing. And as for refresh, I have the best luck with rewetting a bit and then using a spray bottle of water mixed with some conditioner/leave-in, scrunch that and let it do it’s thing. Also, just accepting some frizz!
I’d love to ask your grandmother…
– What are her top three favorite books?
– What are some ways a granddaughter living far from home can be a good granddaughter and nurture our relationship? (thinking especially of my grandmother who is a recent widow, but I live in another country!)
– Favorite childhood memory she has of you!
I’m so glad you’re able to get to Florida to be with your family. It’s amazing to me that your mom picked you up at the airport…just hearing that makes me smile because it means that she’s well enough to do something like that. The body is amazing and I’m so glad that she’s healing so well from her transplant and that she’s able to do ordinary things like picking you up at the airport. 🙂
Your dad looks great! I hope he continues to heal swiftly.
A wonderful idea to do a Q&A with your grandmother! I love to hear what one of her favorite memories of you as a child is. Also, what’s her favorite thing about Finn?
