Fact: I suck at wall balls.
And I don’t just mean that they’re hard and I don’t like doing them…I mean that I physically cannot perform them correctly. Rather than an effortless catch/squat/toss, I’m more slam into my chest with straight legs and hurl. It took some serious convincing to get me to do last night’s CrossFit WOD at Metro. The idea behind CrossFit is that you don’t pick and choose the workouts you want to do. You show up and you do the workout that’s on the board. The fact that I was whining so much about not wanting to do this WOD was a clear sign that it’s one that I needed to do.
The workout was 10 wall balls and 10 burpees, as many reps as possible for 3 minutes. We did 3 rounds of this with 2 minutes of rest in between. So it was only a 13 minute workout but it felt like eternity. At one point in time during the second round my coach came up and tried to help me with my wall ball technique and I ended up frustrated but determined to finish the best that I could.
I survived. I was pretty humbled by the workout. When I got home I was literally shaking and felt kind of out of it. My body is definitely still adapting to these high intensity workouts. It’s a whole new way of training.
After a good night’s sleep I was feeling back to normal. I took Sullie out for an easy three miles this morning and then ate overnight oats for breakfast.
I came home for lunch after meetings and training clients. I was in the mood for tuna salad today but not in a sandwich. Instead I used it as a salad topper. I mixed together tuna, light mayo, plain yogurt, toasted pecans, sweet relish, dried cranberries and lemon pepper. The salad featured mixed greens, tomatoes, apples, goat cheese, mushrooms, red pepper and avocado with honey dijon balsamic.
I taught BodyPump this evening (I’ve kept one class at the Y…I just love BodyPump so much and can’t give it up!). I totally redeemed myself for my disastrous CrossFit workout last night. Actually, I arrived feeling pretty blah but my amazing co-instructor Andre challenged and pushed me. We did our warm up and then moved into squats. Andre brought over two medium sized plates (5 lbs) and told me I was going up on my weight. I almost didn’t add it but at the last minute I did. It was a PR for squat weight for BodyPump. I made it through the whole track (100 + reps) with 50 lbs on my bar! That set the tone for the whole class and I really challenged myself on weight. I went heavy on most of the tracks and it felt so good!
Dinner tonight was roasted brussels sprouts, carrots and parsnips along with quinoa with sautéed onions, mushrooms and tomatoes. I won’t admit how many dips there were into the Nutella jar after dinner. 😉
Hope it’s been a great week!
50 lbs??!! The most I’ve done during bodypump is 30 and I honestly felt like I was on the verge of death. That’s awesome! Congrats 🙂
I am soooo not coordinated enough for wall balls!
me either! 😀
Idk what wall balls are but I would be terrified of getting hit in the boobies.
I think I’ve almost been inspired enough to try my first BodyPump and/or CrossFit class.
*Almost*
🙂
I love burpees and wall balls! I love how they challenge me and push me out of my comfort zone 🙂 I used to always walk away from things that looked hard, or exercises I thought I wouldn’t be able to do.. I’m really trying to make more of an effort to step it up and reach more of my goals.
i LOVE burpees but HATE wall balls! 🙂 so awesome that you are trying to tackle things are hard/challenging. love it!
I’ve been wanting to try cross fit for forever. It looks so fun, and the fact that the workouts are short is even more attractive. I love exercise, but I don’t like having to stay inside to do it 🙂
And your salads always look the best, by the way!
Hey Jen! I was wondering, how heavy is the ball you use for wall ball? I love that you are getting into crossfit and love that you are sharing the workouts with us! 🙂
i started with 14 but went down to 12!
I might sign up for a rookie cross-fit program over the next few months — thanks for the inspiration! 🙂
Everyone can’t be good at everything. 🙂 Chin-ups kicked my booty today. I can’t do pull-ups at all, and I can only do a couple chin-ups on good days. Sadly, today was not one of those days. Oh well – I’m still working on it!
I hope to re-start some BodyPump soon. Maybe as soon as I finish LiveFit.
Wall balls look so easy, but are so hard! Same with jump squats ohmygosh.
I love burpees, I think that’s the only part of the workout I’d like 😉 I’m the same way with wall balls. Tough. I love the way you look at that workout though, even though you did not want to do it a part of you knew that you should do it then. I should be looking at exercises that way, instead of doing the exercises that are easier for me! Just curious, have your workouts changed much at all since joining CrossFit?
Just discovered your blog and love it! hmmm wall balls eh, will definitely have to try those in my next workout. and also, random question but what’s in your overnight oats, above? marmalade? looks yummy!
