Happy Memorial Day! It’s my hope that your day was full of as much gratitude and remembrance as it was cookouts and pool time.
I was really fortunate to spend my Memorial Day morning at the yoga studio teaching class.
One of my students (who has been with me since the beginning over four years ago) is a Marine Corps veteran who served in Afghanistan and lost too many friends while he was there. His practice, service and resilience inspire me and having his presence in the studio this morning gave me chills. I can’t even imagine how he’s served, what that felt like and what he’s been through. He spent the weekend placing flags on veterans graves with his two boys. I have so much gratitude for the women and men who have served our country.
After teaching, taking and then teaching a private it was time to relax and enjoy the holiday. One of our yoga friends invited us to his rooftop pool. The views were pretty great.
As was this appetizer of watermelon with feta, basil and aged balsamic.
What was even better than pool time was meeting our friend’s new labradoddle, Lulu.
She’s seven weeks old and a sweet ball of fur! I love puppies and have already negotiated my way into puppy sitting this cute one while our friend is traveling soon. 🙂
I took my two sweet girls for a long walk when I got home. We walked for an hour while I caught up with my mom and grandmother. This is how Sullie is feeling now. We are all ready for bed!
Hope you had a great Memorial Day!
Feta and watermelon…YES.
Such a good combo!
Lulu is such a cutie…and I love her name. What an honor to have a veteran in your yoga class on Memorial Day. Very fitting. I feel the same way- I have so much gratitude for what servicemen and women do for our country.
I had an interesting experience at my Memorial Day yoga class. I, for the first time ever, was scolded by the instructor after class. My vinyasa flows are not exactly great, which I am aware of, but still wanted to give it a shot. The instructor after class told me I was the reason she had to stop the entire class to show the proper way to do a vinyasa flow. She also said that if I could not do it with integrity then I had no business doing the flow sequence at all and should stay in down dog. I left the class feeling so discouraged. I absolutely love yoga, and love when my instructors modify me during class and when show me proper ways to go into poses, but this scolding felt different. Anyways, I just wanted to share my experience and was interested to know if this was a normal thing or if I am overreacting? I would love your thoughts on this, especially since I cannot stop thinking about it.
hi sara, thanks so much for taking a moment to comment and share your experience. you are totally validated in feeling put out by your teacher’s scolding. i cannot IMAGINE ever approaching a student with that type of feedback. she could have coached you on your vinyasas and proper technique/modifications in such a more loving and kind way. i really hope you don’t take this personally and don’t let it tarnish your love for yoga. sending you love. xo
Puppies and feta! Sounds pretty fabulous to me!
Haha! Right!? 🙂
I got to pet-sit a beautiful 8-month golden retriever for a hike this weekend and it just had the best disposition! I can totally see why you are sold on your two girls.
looks like a pretty ideal memorial day!
How wonderful to have a veteran in your class on Memorial Day, and thank you for the reminder of what the holiday is really about.
That puppy looks like a living teddy bear – how cute!
Looks like a wonderful weekend : )
