Oh man. Just a few hours after hitting publish on my weekend recap post on Monday, Finn’s stomach bug hit me…and it hit hard.
What I am amazed by is how quickly it hit. I went out for that run that I was talking about after writing my last post. I ran five miles and it felt so easy and so good.
Finn and I ate lunch and then I got him down for an afternoon nap a little later. When he woke up I needed to run a few errands. I called my mom on the way to Target and said, “I’m not sure if it’s in my head or if I feel a little funny.” I had a few passing waves of nausea in Target, ran another errand and by the time I was pulling into my driveway, it was all I could do to get the car in park before getting sick.
I was really grateful that this sickness hit around 5 p.m. Finn and I took a shower, got into PJs and got straight into bed. The rest of my Monday evening was truly terrible. I’ll spare you the gory details but let’s just say that at one point I was hugging the toilet, Finn was crying and proceeded to poop. So I was changing him while trying not to also get sick ON him.
I tried to put Finn down for bed in his crib but he was just standing up and holding onto the rails and crying so I just brought him into bed with me. The only way that I could nurse him was side-lying anyway so it was best for both of us. Thankfully, he fell asleep around 8 and slept well minus nursing a couple of times through the night. I slept on and off while waking to get sick until that tapered off around 3 a.m.
When Tuesday morning rolled around, I was grateful that the vomiting had passed but I felt like I’d been hit by a train. I could not believe how achy this bug made me. My low back and legs were killing me all night and well into Tuesday. I had fever and chills. I also had a headache from dehydration. Finn and I took it super easy on Tuesday. We took a two hour morning nap together and laid low all day. Tylenol helped a lot with the achiness and fever.
The only thing that I was able to stomach all day was coconut water, pedialyte and one peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I took an epsom salt bath after getting Finn down for bed last night and it was seriously amazing. I recommend this if you are recovering from a sickness like this.
After crawling into bed around 8:30 p.m. last night and getting a good night’s rest, I am feeling much better today. I teach three classes on Wednesdays but I got subs for all of them because a) I think I need to keep resting and rehydrating and b) I do not want to take the chance of spreading this stuff and I was scheduled to teach at three different places today. I have read that you are still contagious for a couple of days after so better safe than sorry. This is not the kind of yoga/fitness love that I want to be spreading.
Also, Finn and I are scheduled to head to Florida for Easter weekend so I want to be sure that I am rested and ready for that. I do not want to take these germs on a plane or to my family.
I seriously don’t know if I can ever remember having a stomach bug so sudden and so violent in my whole life. How I went from running five miles to curled up in the fetal position in a matter of hours is baffling to me. It was truly terrible and makes me so sad for how Finn must have been feeling when he had it. Someone messaged me on Instagram that she got a stomach bug from her toddler while 28 weeks pregnant and had to go to the hospital to get fluids. Now THAT sounds like a special kind of hell.
I am currently in the process of washing basically everything in my house in hot water and spraying everything down with Lysol. I hope it is a very long time, preferably never, until we deal with this again. (I know I’m dreaming…)
I wish that I had a more fun update for you today but that is what the first half of the week looked like around here. Looking forward to a much brighter and happier second half of the week and Easter weekend! Gosh, there is nothing like feeling truly awful to make you appreciate your health and feeling good so much.
What are your Easter weekend plans?
How has your week started off?
Last time you had a 24 hour bug? How long did it take you to feel back to normal and rehydrated?
You are seriously superwoman! When my son was 9 months old we were on our way out the door to go to brunch at my aunt’s (it was my birthday!) and I remember eating a slice of watermelon and thinking (this literally tastes like garbage). The minute it hit my stomach, I regretted eating it. not 5 minutes after walking into my aunt’s house, I ran to the bathroom and proceeded to get violently ill. It took 4 hours for me to feel like I could even make it the 45 min home. Thank god for my parents and husband because I felt incapacitated.
I can’t believe you went through that alone & with a baby! I’m amazed and you should feel very proud of yourself!!!
Ugh! I remember breastfeeding my twins while so sick that having them touch my abdomen brought on another wave of nausea. There is nothing like that! Way to power through and give yourself the recuperation time needed. Keep the probiotics rolling for a few days to help replace that good gut flora you lost. Happy Easter and travels!
Thanks so much Amber. <3 🙂
I don’t know about superwoman but just doing what you have to do to make it through. I can completely understand how it took 4 hours for you to feel like you could get home. I’m surprised you could go that soon. It is truly completely incapacitating!
Oh girl – biggest of big hugs to you! Glad to hear you’re on the other side of it, but so sorry to hear that stomach bug hit you. They are, quite simply, THE WORST.
We’ve been lucky around here with those of late, but after two instances when my boys were toddlers (once while 8 mos pregnant with #2 and again a year later), I’m pretty anal about dealing with them. The minute either of them show symptoms they’re quarantined to a small, towel-covered spot on the carpet, I use medical gloves to handle anything soiled, and lysol/Clorox ALL THE THINGS. Fingers crossed the streak continues and I sincerely hope your wish to not get hit again comes true!
Worst ever ever ever. Next time I will be joining you in gloves and allllllll the Clorox. Good lord, it was terrible.
I truly cannot imagine this hell while being pregnant. Ugh.
Oh my goodness! I am so glad you are both feeling better!!! <3
I very vividly remember getting a similar 24-hour stomach bug in high school (my Dad had to take me to the hospital at 4am in fear of dehydration!)…no fun for anyone. I then contracted something similar when I landed in Barbados a few years ago for a wedding I was attending. Needless to say, I only had 1 "okay" day of the 4 days we were there and missed the wedding entirely due to being curled up in the bathroom. So awful! I don't wish that kind of sickness on anyone. Glad yours passed quickly!! Get some rest, glad Finn was mostly easy while you were sick. Enjoy a lovely Easter and hope you are 100% better by then 🙂
Oh Nicki, there was a moment where I was like, “TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL.” It is the worst! And I am so sad for your Barbados story. That is heartbreaking.
We’re hosting a group of friends for brunch after church! We are usually with family but I’m excited to do our own thing this year.
The 24 stomach bug is something fierce! I’ve had it twice in probably the last 10 years and it definitely took a few days after to feel normal and not dehydrated. I hope you feel 100% ASAP!
Your Easter sounds so lovely! Enjoy!
Ugh, dealing with the flu is the absolute worst. Our son has had that stomach flu 3 times in 4 months (thanks, daycare!). Luckily he hasn’t thrown up that many times when he’s had the flu but it’s still awful to deal with. The first time he got the flu was right before Christmas. Unfortunately, I got hit with the bug about 2 hours after he did and my husband was at his mom’s that day. So I sent him an “SOS” text and told him he needed to get home asap. That is the most violently ill I have ever been in my life. I felt so bad putting our screaming baby in the crib so I could go vomit but it was my only option. I ended up sleeping on the floor of the bathroom for most of the night because I was getting sick every hour. It was HORRIBLE. But we got through it. Luckily I didn’t catch the bug the next 2 times he got the stomach flu. I have become so numb to puking now, though. A friend at work got sick during the day a few weeks ago and I had to bring her things down to the mother’s room. She was throwing up when I brought her stuff into the room and she felt so bad that I had to see her puking. I had zero reaction to it besides feeling so very bad for her. I used to get super grossed out and paranoid when people threw up but now I’m just totally numb to it.
It is the ABSOLUTE worst! I cannot even believe your poor son had it three times in 4 months. That is just terrible. Someone in Charlotte just told me that her daycare closed for a day because it was so bad. Crazy how contagious it is. Here is hoping that it is a long while before we have to experience this again (or never…but that’s probably wishful thinking)
Oh boy! I know exactly how you felt! A few months back, the whole family came down with it only a few hours apart. One minute I was running washcloths and water for my daughter, the next it was my turn and it literally hit like a flash! I’ve never called for a sub for school for two days in a row, and I’ve never not been able to write sub plans!! It was horrible! Glad to hear you’re feeling better—violent, but short.
This sounds completely miserable. I am so sorry that it took your whole family down. It is completely incapacitating.
Oh I feel your pain! It is truly awful. I had it a couple years ago when I was 13 weeks pregnant. Fever of 101, chills, vomiting and diarrhea for 2 days. I had it again 2 weeks ago at 9 weeks pregnant! This time it was a milder case and only lasted 24 hours but it was awful trying to take care of my 18 month old while sick (husband had to work). And this was all on top of the “morning” (ie, all day!!) sickness i was already having from pregnancy. I am so thankful my husband and daughter didnt catch it. My mom did though ?. Glad you are feeling better.
It is the worst kind of awful. I am SO sorry that you have had to deal with this TWICE while pregnant. I honestly cannot even imagine. On a happier note, congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope that your morning/all day sickness passes soon.
Get well soon!!!
Thanks Cara!
I feel for you. Just happened to me and now my 9 year old is down (must be going around charlotte) . I worked out went to bed and woke up 30 minutes later with total sickness. Definitely feel like I was run over by something. The good thing is that kids seem to get over it quickly. Have fun in Florida!
Oh gosh, I am so sorry that you just went through this too. It’s truly terrible. I have heard that it is going around Charlotte, unfortunately. One friend even told me that her daycare closed for a day because of it.
Being a sick mom is the worst!! And breastfeeding doesn’t help it – I had the flu when my son was four months and I had to pass him to my husband so I could go be sick mid nursing multiple times. Makes me miss being sick before I had my son. Glad you’re feeling better! You’re a rockstar!!
Hope you and Finn are feeling better now! The last time I had the stomach flu, my husband and I went to an outdoor hockey game in the Detroit (MI) area. The game was at the Detroit Tigers stadium and the temp was -7 below. I had not been feeling well the entire weekend. We got home on Sunday and ordered pizza for dinner. I had a couple of pieces of pizza for dinner than sh** hit the fan. I was in bed for a couple of days, running a fever, aches and pains and only able to tolerate drinking water! It was the worst, but I have to admit being at an outdoor hockey game in freezing weather was fun. My husband and a friend drank beer, that kept on freezing as they drank it. I stuck to hot chocolate and coffee to try and stay warm! Probably because I was running a fever, but being outdoors felt good. Take care or you and Finn and happy recovery!
You are awesome being able to do all that while being sick. I hope you get well soon!! Thanks for sharing, hope you are having a lovely day.
