How’s this short week treating you? I can’t believe it’s already Thursday! Can every week be a four-day work week please? 😉
I missed posting yesterday. My schedule was just a little out of control. I taught a 6:40 a.m. yoga with weights class at Flex + Fit (my very first one and it went well! so much fun!), had a hamstring appointment after work and then taught an evening hot vinyasa at Y2. I had wine with yoga friends after class (vino + vinyasa!) and then reading in bed was calling my name when I got home. Sometimes I need a little down time!
This morning’s trifecta of beverages inspired this post. Coffee, water and a green smoothie bigger than my head. I thought I would pop in with a post on my lunch break and talk about something I don’t usually cover in my daily updates – what I drink. I give you guys a pretty good idea of what I eat on a day-to-day basis but rarely discuss what I drink along with it.
My body was SO craving a cold, nutrient-packed smoothie today. Green monster = frozen banana/blueberries/raspberries, a few ice cubes, vanilla protein powder, almond milk and a big handful of spinach.
Here is a look at my daily drinks!
COFFEE – I drink black coffee every morning. I don’t use sugar or creamer for any reason other than my parents drink their coffee black and that’s how I learned to drink it. We have a Cusinart Grind and Brew coffeemaker and whole bean French roast is our standard. I make coffee every morning and take a to-go cup to work with me. I prefer to bring my own coffee from home and not drink the stuff at work.
Recently, I’ve tried to cut back on my coffee consumption a bit. During yoga teacher training, I did a little no coffee experiment for a while and experienced terrible caffeine withdrawal headaches. I can’t drink decaf because it makes me feel sick for some reason so in an effort to cut back, I’ve started skipping my morning cup while I get ready and just take the to-go cup. It’s not even that I feel like I have to have coffee to wake up but I discovered during my coffee hiatus that I really just enjoy the ritual of drinking it.
Okay…that was a lot of detail on my coffee habit. Let me know if you have any other questions!
WATER – I drink a LOT of water throughout the day. I don’t go anywhere without a water bottle. I kept track of my intake for a while last fall and I easily drink over 100 ounces a day. Side note, I just got my first Sigg water bottle and I love it!
HOT TEA – I drink a cup or two of green tea at my desk most afternoons. I’ve always enjoyed hot tea but I started drinking it daily when I gave up my afternoon Diet Coke a couple of years ago. My favorites are Trader Joe’s Green Tea (dirt cheap!), Yogi Green Tea Kombucha and Green Tea Energy and Tazo Zen Green.
In the evenings when I am blogging I often have another cup of caffeine-free tea. Brandon bought this teapot for us for Christmas and we have all kinds of loose tea for it. I love any kind of chamomile blend at night.
SELTZER WATER – Brandon and I go through several bottles of seltzer water every week. It’s a great alternative to soda when you want some fizz. Also, it’s cheap and calorie-free! We always add a slice of lemon or lime.
KOMBUCHA – I drink a couple of kombuchas every week (I would drink more but it is $$$). My favorite brand is Synergy. Kombucha is rich in anti-oxidants and probiotics.
RED WINE – I have a glass or two of red wine a few nights a week. We tend to choose bigger, full-bodied reds like cabernet, malbec and syrah. We drink a lot of Spanish and South American reds because they are great values! Most of our wine shopping is done at Trader Joe’s and Total Wine.
What do your daily drinks look like?
For me, it’s coffee in the AM, water all day, and one Kombucha per day. Sometimes I throw a beer in there for good measure 😉
I drink black coffee or with a little almond milk if I’m home. I got used to drinking it black because I usually can’t get soy or almond milk when I am out! I’d like to start drinking more Kombucha, but it is so expensive!
I drink a glass of almond milk with my breakfast every morning (I’m not a coffee drinker), water throughout the day (and workout)and at night water with dinner or a G2 gatorade if I’m wanting something other than water. I,too, used to be addicted to diet coke and have been free of them for about 8 months (talk about a caffeine withdrawal !). I save my white wine consumption for the weekends! 🙂
Great post! I too drink a lot of green tea. I like to make it iced at work in the afternoon.
I drink either coffee or tea in the morning for my caffeine fix. Black tea or chai usually.
I try to drink a lot of h20. Never had a kombucha. Would like to try one though!
I start my day with a green monster (ALWAYS!) and then try to drink water all day long… but I should probably try and keep track of how much I’m drinking because some days I know it’s not enough
The Jasmine Green Tea from Trader Joes is my fav. I also recently gave up Diet Coke and now only drink sparkling water when I want the fizz. I love it with lime. Plus it makes me feel fancy 🙂
Fun post!
Most of the time I stick to water or gatorade. Like you, I prefer to bring my own coffee from home since the coffee at work is terrible! Way too weak (think the color of iced-tea) and it always tastes burnt. Ew.
I’ll stick with my Starbucks Verona!
looove unsweet iced tea! I have been doing a lot of diet sports drinks lately…is that bad?
i love the verona roast too! yum!
!!! I had the same breakfast. And totally agree with the drinks of choice … mmmm… BLACK coffee, RED wine and delicious Green smoothies. always spinach. Recently I have been adding romaine. usually if I add kale there are still some chunks of them stems left floating-no thank u.
always Spirulina. Have you ever tried Spirulina? very potent, but if you add cinnamon as well it really masks the flavor.
I love making smoothies cuz you can always add whatever leftover fruit is sitting around which may be a bit too soft to eat. You usually do soymilk. I usually add a little juice and water. protein powder. 😉 I feel AMAZING after drinking green smoothis.
Lots of water, usually warm. Sometimes with shots of apple cider vinegar.
Like you, I grind and brew my own French roast every morning and take it with me in my to-go cup. I never stop and buy already-brewed coffee anywhere unless we are completely out. Also like you, I enjoy the ritual of drinking it but don’t necessarily *need* it. I just get excited about leaving for work b/c it means I get to start on my cup of coffee! I don’t drink it until I leave the house. Weird. I think it’s b/c I would have to rush to drink it before I left and I really prefer to sip on coffee, not gulp it down. Other than coffee, during the day I keep my water bottle w/ me and that’s it. Evenings almost always hold a glass (or two!) of red wine. I occasionally try to do smoothies as snacks but I find that it’s more trouble than I have time for. Maybe I will work on changing that this summer with my free time. 🙂
I love green monsters! I drink about 80oz of water each day, and I usually have one Diet Coke too, which I’m trying to quit or at least cut back.
I’m in the market to buy a good blender for green smoothies. Which one do you use? I am thinking Vita-Mix or Blendtec, but they are $$$. Worth it? Not sure yet. Thanks!!!
mary – i have a terrible blender that leaves the ice in chunks! i would LOVE to get a vitamix but they are expensive!
Hi! Just popped in on your blog and saw that you drink green smoothies! Love it, we got a VitaMix a few months ago and I love making/drinking green smoothies. Usually I do plain, or Vanilla, organic yogurt, a few carrots, spinach, apple, and banana, and a little water and ice cubes. YUM. This summer I’m stocking up on a lot of berries to freeze for smoothies. Sometimes throw in a little bit of chia seeds and/or wheat germ. Cheers!
oh i am jealous of your vitamix! i have never added apples to my smoothies. sounds good! frozen berries are the best! 🙂
If you love making smoothies, and especially green smoothies with fruits AND vegetables and supplements, I definately recommend investing in a vitamix!! They’re awesome. About ten min. of throwing everything in there, give it a whirl, and viola! I usually make a whole pitcher full so my hubby and I each get to drink a pint. They’re spendy, but SO worth it! A great investment and have a 7 year warrenty, last forever. It would be great inspiration for your readers too 🙂
oh p.s.- apples are great, the seeds of most fruit can be thrown in there too!
GAAAAH all of this looks so good! I recently gave up coffee and am having headaches. I really hope they go away soon. Can you taste the spinach in the smoothie? Or is it pretty much masked by the berries?
the headaches will go away soon! maybe ease your way out of the coffee and drink tea instead for a while. it has significantly less caffeine and will help you taper off.
you can’t taste the spinach at all! it’s totally covered up by the bananas and berries!
I drink a ton of water too. Sadly, I gave up my diet coke habit last year only to begin drinking it again this year. So weak, I know! I really need to kick it for good!
I’m a huge fan of Starbucks coffee and, of course, beer! Especially after a long run 🙂
I love love love Kombucha! You’re right, I would totally drink more, but these babies are so expensive!! I did just buy a starter kit though, so we’ll see how the home brewing turns out!
I either have a coffee or a skinny chai tea latte in the morning. I am loving chai tea lately! I love the clove smell. 🙂 And I try to have a lot of water as well. I can’t believe the wonders it’s done for my skin.
Oh and wine of course. I like the red’s myself: cabernets and pinot noirs.
I drink coffee with a little creamer in the morning and water throughout the day (+ more decaf coffee sometimes). On occasion I enjoy drinking zevia cokes (stevia sweetened 0 cal cokes), and on a very rare occasion I drink diet coke 🙂
I cannot wait to try your yoga with weights class! Sounds like such a cool concept. All I drink now is water, but I do have lemonade once in awhile.
So good running into you again this week 🙂
Does anyone have any good tips for cutting out diet coke? I love the stuff, but I know its not the best for me…
I looove coffee! I recognize that I’m addicted, but I just don’t feel the need to stop. haha Like you, I typically drink it black. I really want to start drinking more tea. I just never get around to making it. I never really drink smoothies. There’s just something about chewing that I enjoy so much. haha I’ve seen you blog a bit about kombucha. I saw it the other day in the store and was dumbfounded by the price haha But I tried the one my friend bought and it was quite delicious.
