Our alarms were set for 7 a.m. on Saturday morning to make it to Barry’s Bootcamp for the 8 a.m. class.
The wonderful thing about where we were staying is that we rarely found ourselves more than a mile from anywhere we wanted to go. Barry’s Bootcamp was an easy half mile walk on Saturday.
On the way there I saw all of these runners and bikers heading up Lafayette. I thought it was a race but then saw a sign promoting Summer Streets.
For three Saturdays in August, the City of New York closes Lafayette/Park from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. so that people can take to the streets and get moving. The road is closed from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, nearly 7 miles. How incredible is that!? There are tons of rest stops, special activities, educational opportunities and more.
Had we known about Summer Streets ahead of time we might have planned a run but we hit up Barry’s as scheduled.
I’m going to write a post with a full review of Barry’s but I LOVED it! (Excuse my scratched up leg…I fell running at the beach last week.)
Our first stop after Barry’s was La Colombe for coffee. I loved this coffee shop!
It took all of my willpower not to leave with a croissant (and only because donuts were on the agenda).
After picking up coffee we walked over to Juice Generation to get a green juice before donuts. I was super impressed by their juice making operation. These are some serious juicers! Our juices were out within 2 minutes of ordering.
We ordered two different juices and both of us found our juices to be a little too sweet but very easy to drink.
Our next stop was Cafe Angelique to pick up some Dough Donuts for breakfast. My friend’s brother insisted that we had to try them.
We chose the Dulce de Leche, Cafe Au Lait and Lemon Poppyseed. When we arrived back at the apartment he had scrambled eggs with tomatoes and avocado ready so I was grateful to have a little protein to balance out the donuts! 🙂
After breakfast we researched Broadway tickets online. We were interested in seeing a matinee but the tickets were all over $150. We made the decision to brave Times Square to visit the TKTS booth. They offer same-day Broadway tickets at a 20-50% discount. Plan A was Broadway, Plan B was museum and shopping if we couldn’t get tickets.
Times Square was CRAZY but we were so lucky that there was no wait at TKTS and we were able to get tickets to see Kinky Boots for just $75 so it was worth the madness.
Kinky Boots is a Tony Award winning musical that features music and lyrics from Cyndi Lauper. Crazy, right?
“The musical tells the story of Charlie Price, who inherits a shoe factory from his father. To save the business, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen, Lola. With Lola’s help, Charlie develops a plan to produce a line of high-heeled boots. In the process, he and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.”
I loved it! It’s been so long since I’ve seen a musical like this (probably Rent last time I was in NYC) and it was such a feel-good experience.
After the show we took the subway back to the Washington Square stop. It was such a breath of fresh air to be out of the hustle and bustle of Times Square.
We were both starving when we arrived back at the apartment but we had early dinner reservations. I had a piece of peanut butter toast and got ready for dinner.
We took a stroll through SoHo to Il Buco for dinner. We were so lucky that the weather in NYC was hot but not humid at all during our visit. The evenings were absolutely gorgeous. I loved this building with these gold statues.
At Il Buco we found that the ambiance was great but unfortunately the food and service were “eh.” Full review to come.
After dinner we walked over to the Momofuku Milk Bar in the East Village to try the cereal milk that SO MANY of your recommended via the blog and social. We all tried the signature cereal milk with the cornflake crunch topping. We heard amazing things about the crack pie as well but didn’t try it.
After ice cream I officially started using #cupcakesdonutsandicecream to describe our trip.
We ended our night by attempting to go to the top of the Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center but the lines were SO long. We sadly took the subway home and headed to bed, exhausted from a long day.
There you have day two! I’ll post the third and final day recap tomorrow…it was my favorite day!
Oh New York. How i miss it. Trying to get a long weekend there with my mum next year but planning a wedding & being in Ireland is making it hard to justify. But your post has made me all the more wanderlusty. 🙂
Ohh how I I was looking forward to the recaps and I am loving them!! The balance of treats and health/physical activity is so reflective of your whole blog 🙂 Definitely giving me the NYC itch!
I was so mad when I found out about Summer Streets. Missed it by a week! I’ve heard Barry’s Bootcamp is similar to Orange Theory? Not sure if you’ve taken that but I’m interested to hear your review.
I’ve never been to Orange Theory, but one just opened up in Charlotte. I plan on trying it out and I’ll let you know!
Orange Theory is one of my favorite workouts! I’m surprised Charlotte just got a studio, they are everywhere in my area.
those donuts!
They were as good as they looked if not better!
The crack pie is too sweet for my liking but the compost cookie…mmmmphhmm#*^@)!!!!!!!!! AWESOME. I’d brave a 21h flight again from across the world to have one of those! Sweet, hint of salt, buttery to the max, just yummm….
That sounds amazing!!
So love the idea behind “Summer Streets” – wish we had something like that in Atlanta! My daughter and I walked through Times Square at 6 am and it was so different from the hustle and bustle it has been when we’ve been at later times – we somehow ended up at Crumbs with a Red Velvet Cupcake – GOSH! Love all your pictures!
Ha! Cupcakes are a good idea any time of day.
