Hi friends! It may have been a short week but it was a doozy of a week! I have had sooooo many conversations with plumbers, HVAC people, painters and roofers. As I mentioned in my Memorial Day Weekend recap, I have to replace the HVAC at my primary residence and then my rental house has a couple-week window between tenants so I’m hustling to get some repairs done over there too. One involves removing the entire HVAC system so that the plumbers can access a drain line to change it from a 2- to 3-inch line and then re-installing the HVAC. WHYYYYY?
House stuff aside (it just is what it is), we had a crazy/worrisome thing come up with Finn this week. I got a call from his nanny on Wednesday morning saying that he was unable to walk (she had picked him up from his dad’s house). I went to check on him at his art class and he would not walk or put any weight on his left leg. He kept saying his knee hurt but he could bend it, move it around and crawl on it. I was concerned he had fractured something because his dad told me he’d been on the trampoline the night before. We took him into the pediatrician and they referred us to pediatric orthopedics. We weren’t able to get in to see the orthopedist until the following day and by then Finn had started to walk again. After his x-rays came back clear, he was diagnosed with transient synovitis.
It’s one of the most common causes of hip (and sometimes knee) pain and limping in children. Doctors do not know exactly what causes it but it’s often developed after having a viral infection like an URI or GI issues. It’s most common in children ages 3-8 and occurs more frequently in boys. Finn does seem to have a super mild upper respiratory infection/cold right now so I guess it all makes sense.
Luckily, transient synovitis typically begins to clear itself within 24-48 hours and is mostly improved in 7-10 days with no long-term effects. Finn seems to be feeling much better and had a fun playdate this morning with his little BFF Jake. I’m so grateful that he’s okay and that there were no fractures or anything more serious. He’s taking off for a week at the beach with his dad tomorrow so this is all good news!
You know, I don’t usually go for the whole Mercury in retrograde thing but might have been feeling it a bit here this last week.
In other Finn news…he’s super into peanut butter! I have waited three years for this moment, haha. I offer peanut butter to Finn regularly and often mix it into things like smoothies and oatmeal but he’s never been a fan of it in a way where it’s front and center. When we were in Florida last I was eating a piece of peanut butter toast and offered him a bite. I guess he really liked it because he’s been asking for peanut butter ever since. Yesterday he was getting the PB out of the cabinet, opening it and sticking his finger in it to eat it straight out of the jar. Smart kid.? He’s been asking for a lot of peanut butter toast. Love it…and a good reminder that continued exposure can work, even when it seems fruitless.
And now for an update on my furry children! I finally found a mobile groomer that a) I like and b) doesn’t have a six-month waiting list. She came to my house last week and groomed both of the dogs. They both look SO good and I’m so pleased that she didn’t shave Benji and left him soft and a little fluffy. I love the outline cut she did on Zoey.
Here’s a side view of Zoey girl! Let me tell you, she was not a fan of the pink bows on her ears. They only lasted one day. Pretty sure Benji got them off for her. I’m excited to have a regular grooming schedule for the dogs where I don’t have to ferry them back and forth to the groomer and Benji doesn’t have to leave the house or be in an environment that is stressful for him.
If you’re in the Charlotte area, here is the information for The Groovy Groomer. Elizabeth told me that she worked for Pet’s Mart for six years and wanted to start her own grooming business. She is just getting started but came recommended by another doodle owner in my neighborhood. She is taking new clients but I’m sure her book will fill quickly. Always love to support another woman in business and she was up for me sharing her contact info. Tell her Zoey and Benji sent you. ?
Finn is just waking up from his nap and I want to enjoy the rest of the day with him before he’s away for a week on vacation with his dad. I’ve got some great posts planned for you guys in the next week or so. Stay tuned!
Have a great weekend!
