Between teaching yoga and fitness classes at multiple studios and gyms around town on a weekly basis and traveling for work and to visit family, I am constantly on the go and living out of packed bags…whether they be gym bags, book bags or suitcases. I learned very early on the importance of pre-planning when it comes to eating well and sticking to my normal diet. Being away from home without dependable food options can be a recipe for disaster.
Since I know that most of you are also busy, active ladies who are juggling things like demanding work schedules, motherhood, family life and travel along with a desire to eat well and workout, I wanted to share some of my best tips for eating healthy when you’re on the go.
1. NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT SNACKS
My number one piece of advice above all others is to NEVER, EVER leave the house without snacks. This has become even more critical since adding a toddler into the mix. Snacks are life for adults and littles! Of course, snacks will vary depending on the length of your time away from home, personal preferences, access to a cooler/fridge, etc. but I really love healthy, whole food snacks like what you see above…fruit, cheese, granola with nuts and seeds, etc. alongside things like crackers and bars.
2. HAVE A FEW POWERHOUSE STAPLES THAT YOU NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT
I have several powerhouse staples that I never travel without. These are things that I know I can count on time and time again and will never let me down. For me there are three things: 1) my go-to protein bars, 2) nut butter jars or packets (rarely travel without a whole jar of peanut butter) and 3) Lonolife Bone Broth Sticks which can be stirred into hot liquids.

3. PACK MEALS WHENEVER POSSIBLE
You will rarely find me taking off for a road trip or flight without a packed meal. I would personally much rather eat a healthy meal from my own kitchen than to rely on fast food, gas station selections or overpriced airport options. The key is packing things that hold up well to travel and that are easy to eat on the go. Here are some of my favorites.
FOR CAR TRAVEL:
- Smoothies
- Sandwiches and wraps
- Snack meals with things like cheese, something crunchy, fresh fruit like sliced apples or grapes, nuts, etc.
FOR AIR TRAVEL:
- Salads
- Grain bowls
- Sandwiches and wraps
- Ready to eat oatmeal cups where you just have to add hot water (ask for hot water at a coffee place) and add in some fruit or nut butter
4. TRY TO MAKE BREAKFAST AS “NORMAL” AS POSSIBLE
When I am on the go, I have found that if I can eat a “normal” breakfast that I feel so much better throughout the day. I almost always either pack breakfast (things like overnight oats, chia pudding, hard boiled eggs, nut butter, certain fruits and oatmeal cups travel well) or stop at a store wherever I’m going to get stuff like yogurt, granola, fruit and hard boiled eggs since I almost always have access to a fridge. If I don’t have the ability to do this, I try to make breakfast something like oatmeal, a smoothie, eggs and fruit, etc. Starting my day with a healthy, well-rounded meal that includes a great balance of protein, carbs and fat ensures I’m going to feel my best when away from home.
I am not knocking eating out or eating things like pastries, bagels, pancakes, etc (because you all know I eat these things a lot!) BUT for me personally, I know I’m not going to feel super great if I eat all three meals out and the things I’m eating are all outside of my normal daily diet.
