Good news! I just got a killer deal on a flight to go visit my parents at the beach in early October. The weather should be absolutely beautiful and I’m looking forward to a long weekend on the beach and some quality time with my family! Until then I’ll be dreaming of this…
Bad news. I have a cold. 👿
I woke up Sunday with a sore throat that got progressively worse throughout the day. There is a cold going around and I knew the sore throat was a sign that I was going to get it. My colds always start with a sore throat. I spent most of Monday resting but it didn’t stop the cold from developing into congestion, chest tightness, coughing, the works. I have not been sick in so long so I’m pretty bummed that I caught this cold. I was just bragging to my dad last week about how I work in a gym and spend so much time with sweaty people in yoga studios and never get sick. Well, I’m eating those words now.
I haven’t had much of an appetite so I’ve been eating simple, easy foods.
Apple cinnamon oatmeal with peanut butter and apple butter.
A purple green smoothie with banana, mango, mixed berry blend, almond milk, almond butter and spinach.
Gingerade Kombucha. The only thing that helped my throat feel better yesterday.
Chicken soup from Chick-Fil-A. They actually make delicious chicken soup that’s full of carrots, celery, chicken and egg noodles.
And I had vegetable guilt so I ordered a side salad and was excited when they gave me an entree sized “side salad.” My total meal was $5.02. Score.
This flatbread is by far the most interesting thing that I have eaten in the past few days. I defrosted a piece of whole wheat naan from the freezer and topped it with olive oil, sliced figs, pancetta, steamed spinach, goat cheese and mozzarella. I baked it at 400 for about 10 minutes. It was so good! Definitely recreating this again sometime today. Cheese + bread is always a comforting combo…even when you fancy it up with figs and pancetta. 😉
I’ve been able to maintain easy workouts like steady state cardio and yoga. I actually feel best right after I get my blood flowing and quit laying around on the couch. I’m just taking it day by day and listening to my body.
Do you workout when you have a cold? Generally I do because it helps me feel better. Deal breakers are fevers, muscle fatigue/pain and severe coughs/chest congestion. Check out this interesting New York Times article on exercising with a cold.
Hope you feel better… I’ve had the sinus pressure fun the past few days. Boo! But yes I agree, working out while sick (with those few times) help me more than hurt. We did a 7 minute AMRAP of burpee-box jumps last night and I could actually breathe afterwards because my “stuffiness” cleared up. Anyways- get well 🙂
I never exercise when i am sick. I am too miserable and light headed. Feel better jen!
Feel better sweet girl! I sometimes workout when I’m sick…it really depends if I’m congested above or below my shoulders. If it’s below aka chest congestion, I stay away from workouts since I’m asthmatic, i could get worse. If it’s above like throat or head cold/congestion, I will do low key, steady state workouts. I hope you get over this soon! Being sick is no fun!
I’ve heard or read somewhere that it’s okay to exercise if your symptoms are from your neck up, but if they are neck down then you should not. This is the rule I tend to follow unless I have a full blown sinus infection! Hope you feel better soon! 🙂
Get better soon! I workout when I’m sick, well sometimes. I guess it depends what I’m sick with. If I’m coughing and have the chance at getting others sick, no. However, if I feel just a little sick with a minor sore throat or stomach ache I usually do.
The EXACT same thing has happened to me. It started with a sore throat on Sunday…. I teach 7th grade so I am 99.9% sure that is where I got it from.
PS – Thank you for motivating me to work out today! I was just thinking, “well, my head kind of hurts…maybe I will just rest” before I read your blog. But now I changed my mind 🙂
Ouch, feel better soon! I hate being sick, but I would so much rather have a head cold than a stomach bug…I HATE stomach bugs.
Exercising with a cold? Definitely – just really, really gently. I agree with you, it actually makes me feel better, at least for a little bit!
Feel better soon, Jen! When I’m sick, I tend to play it by ear when it comes to my workouts. Usually, if the sickness affects the “top half” of my body (sore throat, stuffy nose, etc.), I hit the gym, but if there’s a lower-body issue (stomach bug, etc.), then I take a rest day.
I do exercise with a cold and think it makes me feel better… I think in the long run though when I rest more while sick I get better sooner… it is a tricky one!! Feel Better Soon!
Hope you feel better soon, Jen! I was completely out of commission with a stomach bug that started almost two weeks ago and lingered because I tried to push through it instead of taking a break. BTW, thanks for the quinoa/lentil recipe!
This cold has been circulating in our house too, my daughter had it first, my oldest is almost done with it and I woke up coughing this morning.
Hope you feel 100% soon!
I always get Chic-Fil-A soup when I’m sick. I felt a cold coming on recently and also started drinking Emergen C all day long and eating the Vitamin C gummies. I still had the cold but it seemed to be shortened. Hope you are resting!
