I really appreciate your support and encouraging comments regarding my running hiatus due to my nagging hamstring injury. Sometimes I feel really guilty that I can’t give you all as much of the “runner” part of PBR that I’d like to. Trust me, I want to be out there running and racing so badly…but I also want to be able to run for many years to come so I’m trying to be mindful of my injury and let it heal.
In the absence of running and my yoga practice, I’ve been keeping myself quite busy. I’ve been teaching two classes per day (Sunday-Wednesday) and having a little bit of fun too. This morning started out with teaching a hot vinyasa class at Y2. I was just subbing but I loved teaching the early class. I usually practice ashtanga during this time so teaching was a nice distraction from missing my practice. I did stay after my class and do some hip and quad openers and backbends because I just had to do something yoga-related.
Breakfast was overnight oats at my desk when I got to work. In the mix today…plain Greek yogurt, unsweetened almond milk, oats, chia seeds, raspberries, blueberries, bananas and cinnamon. Topped with jam, sunflower butter and a sprinkle of granola.
This breakfast held me over all morning and through the lunchtime power yoga class I taught at Flex + Fit. I didn’t pack anything for lunch so I had to get creative when I got back to work.
There were bagels in the kitchen and cucumbers and tomatoes from someone’s garden. I decided to make a bagel sandwich on a whole wheat bagel with veggie cream cheese and the cucumbers and tomatoes. It was tasty!
And Brandon rounded out my lunch by bringing me an apple. Special delivery! I am so lucky that our offices are really close.
I planned on swimming this afternoon but to be totally honest with you, I just wasn’t feeling heading back out to the gym when I got home. For the past month or so I’ve pretty much been teaching every single weeknight and nights off are few and far between. I decided to bail on the gym and hang out around the house instead.
This cute face was a big part of my decision to stay home. I ended up cleaning, hanging out with Brandon and Sullie and relaxing. We opened a bottle of wine and cooked dinner together.
Grilled eggplant brushed with olive oil and balsamic and topped with herbs and parmesan, grilled zucchini and grilled honey soy marinated shrimp. French bread on the side.
And then things got really good…I foam rolled my upper back (with Sullie’s help, of course) and it was seriously amazing. Comparable to getting a back massage. This is a public service announcement…if you own a foam roller, roll out your back. If you don’t own a foam roller, buy one ASAP! Here is my post with foam rolling videos for the upper and lower body.
I just ate some ice cream but I was too lazy to take the memory card out of my computer, put it back in my camera and take a picture. Yeah, I’m exhausted.
Bed time! Teaching yoga with weights in the AM!!!!!
….your pictures are upside down a lot…I don’t usually comment, just didn’t know if you knew that or not.
They don’t look upside down to me?
For some reason the pictures I take with my iPhone show up upside down when viewing on an iPhone or iPad…but not on the computer. I’ll get it figured out!
Sorry!!! I didn’t mean to be a bother. I was just letting you know! I love your blog! Read it everyday! Hope your injury gets better fast! ๐
you are totally NOT a bother! thank you for the head’s up! i need to get that fixed. have a great day! ๐
I am pretty much obsessed with my foam roller, but I’ve never used it on my upper back! I should definitely roll it out with a glass of wine in hand ๐
Me too, I’m totally trying this. ๐
I need to get a foam roller so bad. I hope your leg gets better, I’m now in phys therapy for a hamstring injury too and I totally sympathize. I haven’t done any running or biking in a MONTH – I’m turning into a crazy person!
Glad you enjoyed your night!! A night off is SO important sometimes!
Foam roller + wine = good time! I’ll have to try rolling out my back. I do love my foam roller and use it every day.
I hope you’re all healed up ASAP!
Foam roller… on my ‘one day I’ll get one’ list. Maybe when I’m back to working out hard ๐
I’m so sorry this injury is still nagging you, Jen. But I’m glad you got a bonus night at home with the furry one! Sometimes a relaxing night in trumps a workout. I hope your leg feels better soon!
I am a big fan of the wine+foam roller. What a great and relaxing combo! I know you will get over this injury soon! Until then, air yoga date?
So sorry about your injury! And Sullie is sooooooo cute – he always looks like he is smiling!
Sullie might be the cutest thing ever. That’s all. ๐
Ahhh I foam rolled my entire body before bed last night! I melted into the floor after… : )
I think listening to your body is what is most important. You are doing the right thing by backing off of running. And, it doesn’t make your blog seem any less entertaining or important! Today I was supposed to run 4 miles, according to my half-marathon training plan. I didn’t feel like it though…my body is tired, and I am just plain tired (not enough sleep the past two nights!). So, I did yoga this morning and I am going to swim this evening instead. My running mojo will be back after I get some good rest. ๐
don’t feel guilty—i doubt people are reading your blog solely for the “runner” part…runners go through seasons and unfortunately you’re in an off-season due to injury. no biggie though–you’ll come back around ๐
ps. totally going to foam roll my back tonight!
Hi Jen,
Love your blog. I am actually heading out the door to attend Bodypump as I type this. I have an odd question but I am hoping that you will answer it. I was looking at the picture in your living room (I am guessing that is the room) and wondering if you know what color the paint is. I am getting my house painted next week and am having trouble finding the perfect shade of tan (sand). Can you help? Thanks!
How can you not fall for those gorgeous brown eyes? ๐
I just got my foam roller; I’ll have to try it out on my back! My upper back is always so tense.
