It is the most beautiful day in Charlotte. It was in the 60’s when I woke up this morning and now the sun is shining and temperatures are hovering right around 80 with lower humidity. My ideal weather! I headed into the gym to train some early clients before taking off to teach and practice yoga. The amazing Johnna Smith was subbing this morning and it’s always a treat to catch her class since she travels so much. I can’t even explain to you how great my body felt afterwards. We spent a long time at the end of class in hip openers and inversions. It seemed like I was floating out of the room at the end of class. You have to soak up these special practices! 🙂 All I’ve wanted to do since returning from my trip is yoga since I ran every day while I was gone.
A less happy update on the Sullie front…she had an allergic reaction to something that caused a terrible rash on her belly and around her back leg. She chewed and scratched at it so much that it became infected and raw. She hadn’t eaten in three days, had lost 5 pounds and was very lethargic (which is totally not her style) so Brandon and I rushed her to the vet on Monday morning. I will spare you the photos because they are so bad and make me so sad but they had to shave a big area on her belly and back leg. She has to wear a cone and a sock to keep her from getting at the infected places. She’s on steroids and antibiotics and the vet is confident that she’ll make a full and quick recovery.
I’ve been keeping a close eye on her and she seems to be improving. I fed her chicken and rice for dinner last night and again for breakfast this morning and she inhaled it so I’m happy to see her eating. I’ve been able to take her cone off this morning in my office and she’s leaving things alone so I’m hoping the itching has subsided with the steroid. Poor thing! It is awful to see her in so much pain and discomfort.
Post-vet lunch back at the gym was carrot ginger soup with tons of carrots and peas. It was vegan and the market I got it from uses a cashew cream to thicken the soup. Carrot ginger is my favorite variety of soup ever. After lunch Sullie and I split a blueberry greek yogurt bar so that I could sneak her pills in. It was the only thing on hand at the gym that I could get her to eat. Sullie thought it was an awesome treat. And yes, I have reached new levels of dog mom ridiculousness…I split a bar with my dog.
I recently cut back on early morning and late night teaching/training and it’s been so nice to sleep in some mornings and to leave work at a regular hour some evenings. This is a REALLY hard thing to do in the fitness industry. The biggest bonus is that it’s giving me more time to cook. Last night’s dinner was pecan crusted chicken tenders, roasted okra and rice with sauteed spinach. I may or may not have eaten a chocolate peanut butter oat ball from the depths of the freezer after! I cross my heart that I will post the recipe soon!

Off to kiss the pup. Y’all have a wonderful day!
Poor Sullie!! Hugs for her!
Oh, poor Sullie! That is soooo sad. I feel for you and for your pup. Hope Sullie makes a speedy recovery, Jen. You’re a great dog mom. Sullie is lucky to have such caring parents!
I just love your website. The perfect combo of info and life! I am a RD and I often direct clients to your site. Keep up the great work and feel better Sullie!
thank you so much. that is such a kind compliment and i appreciate you taking the time to comment and tell me. have a great day!
Thinking about Sullie!!! You are being a great mom — I would be doing the exact same thing with my dogs!! Hoping she feels better and like herself really soon!!!!
Poor Sullie! It’s so hard when fur-babies are in pain. You’re such a great mama to her, and pictures of her always make me smile. I enjoy reading your posts & am glad you’re taking back some time for yourself. Have a great afternoon!
Poor Sullie. We call the collar the “Elizabethan Collar”. You are good dog parents and I do the same to sneak my dog his pills. What we will do for our dogs!
Oh no, I hope Sullie is feeling better soon!
OMG, I think I have the same socks as Sullie! Poor doggie. one of my dogs is chewing his leg, but he also has neurological problems, so he would not be able to handle the cone. I used to be able to get him to stop chewing by saying his name, then saying it more sharply, but now I have to resort to spraying it with some bitter tasting stuff. It started out as an irritated place, and then turned into an apparently all absorbing habit. Poor Rexie! You said you rushed her to the vet Monday morning – my dog problems always seem to develop over the weekend as well.
Oh I’m so sorry to hear about Sullie. That must have been terrible to come home to. I’m glad to hear the doctor is optimistic about a speedy recovery. You’re a great dog mom so I’m sure Sullie appreciates everything you do for her. I had a very sick kitty last year around this time and it broke my heart to see him in so much pain. Thank goodness the vet took wonderful care of him and he made a full recovery.
Glad to hear you cut back on morning/evening hours to get some more sleep/you time in. Extra sleep (or rather, enough sleep) always makes a world of difference to me.
Oh I hope poor sullie re overs quickly! So heartbreaking : (
Aww poor Sullie. My golden had some really bad hot spots recently and I have a spray that makes her big brown eyes so pitiful. I can’t stand it so I get her frosty paws ice cream so she can have her own treat after. Being a dog mom is hard work!
glad that sullie is doing better. hawk was sick a few weeks ago and it was the worst.
Poor Sullie, I’m glad it seems he is doing better. It is so hard with animals b/c they can’t tell you if it is hurtin gor not!! 🙁 I think that’s what makes us fur-mommies ridiculous.
Carrot ginger soup and pecan roasted chicken… yum!!! You eat like a Queen! Sounds great!
Send Sullie mine and my pups love! 😉 I know it’s not easy seeing her at anything but 100%! She is lucky to have an owner that loves her like you do! I love that you shared your treat with her, I would do the EXACT same thing! 🙂 I hope you had a awesome, relaxing and rejuvenating weekend!
I hate to hear that about Sullie – hope she is back to herself SOON! Pecan crusted chicken tenders look yummy!
Poor puppy – our female gets horrible ear infections and has seen the cone many times. We’re also “that dog mom/dad” that had their dog tested for food allergies to eliminate food allergens and I also make their dog treats 🙂 Not ashamed!
I hope sullie feels better asap!
Poor Sullie tell her that her Greatgram loves her.
Poor Sullie, and poor Mom! When our childhood dog got extremely ill, my mom would hand feed her chicken and rice. When Holly got better and we gave her dog food again, she gave us the most scathing look I have ever seen, from either human or animal! Side note, our dog now (mine and my husband’s) has horrible skin problems and has also itched himself into a staph infection. Poor puppies. Hope Sullie feels better soon!
Aww hope Sullie gets well soon! In June my dog had an anal gland infection. It was so disgusting and I felt so bad for her. She had to wear a pair of boxer shorts tied at the side with a hair tie lol, and also a cone head. It’s funny how dogs can look so pathetic but they have no idea
Hope Sullie is feeling even better! 🙂
Aw. Poor Sullie. I hope she’s feeling better soon!
