One of the things that I have felt consistently the most grateful for through stay at home is the amazing spring weather that we’ve had in Charlotte. Most days have been sunny with temperatures that are not too hot or cold and low-humidity. Also, the mosquitos aren’t out yet which is perhaps the best blessing of all.
Finn, Zoey, Benji and I spent a good chunk of our weekend outside either playing in the back yard or going on walks.
Zoey is in a cone as a precautionary measure. She is dealing with some allergies and was chewing/licking at the inside of her back leg, before she could turn it into a big open sore, I cleaned her up and coned her up. It took Benji a day or two to adjust to the cone. He’s attracted to chewing soft things like blankets, dog beds, plush toys, etc and he kept chewing at it and pulling it off of her. I think he’s finally used to it but I was finding the cone all over the place for the frist couple of days!
This little fellow loves to be outside and is never not asking me for “shoes” and “outside.” He just runs around the back yard for hours laughing, chasing after the dogs and exploring. I feel so fortunate to have a safe, fenced-in place for him to exercise his independence and expend his energy! 🙂
The exciting event of the weekend was a pair of birds who were stalking my back yard. The male bird kept thwapping (made that word up) at my windows and hanging out on my patio furniture. I found out they were doing the same thing at my neighbor’s house and she figured out that they had little baby birds in their back yard bird house. She did some internet research and discovered that the male will often “attack” reflective surfaces when he sees his reflection to protect the nest.
I sent this update to my mom in a text message and she replied, “You all have compassion for that poor bird. Sounds like he is a frazzled new dad.” Haha. I’m just glad to know that what’s going on is a normal thing and that their nest didn’t get destroyed or anything like that.
My other exciting piece of news to share is that I have a 23 month old! Finn turned 23 months on Saturday and it’s hard to believe that I’ll have a TWO YEAR OLD in less than a month! I melted when I saw this photo in my TimeHop from last year when he turned 11 months.
Obviously, second birthday plans are up in the air right now but rather than dwelling on that, I am trying to celebrate all of the extra time that I get with my amazing boy. It is really freaking hard to balance getting work done with caring for a very active toddler, and there are moments that I miss dropping him at preschool so that I can teach a class or go do something on my own, but I also know that I’ll never regret spending this time with him.
I have had to practice a lot of flexibility and letting go of control during this time and I’m trying my best to look at it through a lens of positivity instead of stress. Note, this isn’t something that I have figured out! It’s a daily practice. (Especially on days like Saturday when Finn skipped his nap.)
We have been walking in the neighborhood a lot instead of on the trails, especially in the evenings. It’s been really nice to see so many neighbors out sitting in their front yards or on walks and it helps to give us a little social interaction. There are also all sorts of uplifting things to see like signs thanking those on the front lines, painted rocks with encouraging messages, chalked streets with games, drawings and positive words, etc.
I’ll be back tomorrow with another edition of Finn’s recent eats. I hope you all have a good week and give yourselves a lot of grace for however you feel.
