Hi! I am currently camped out in the Punta Cana airport with two hours left to go before my flight departs. They like to get you here reaaallllyyy early which can be good when the airport is a zoo but today it was smooth sailing. This is the first time I’ve ever had a really smooth airport experience in my three times flying in and out of Punta Cana. They just opened a brand new terminal that is one thousand times nicer than it used to be. Thankfully, US Air is serviced by this new terminal.
I still got to soak up a few more hours of beach time this morning with a walk and some time by the pool finishing this book. One of my friends brought it along and finished it so I picked it up yesterday. It sucked me in and I finished it in one day but I didn’t love it. I usually love Emily Griffin and have read all of her books but this one didn’t do it for me. From the feedback I received on Instagram, neither did many others! She’s still a great author and I love her writing style…I just didn’t like the story in this one.
After I finished my book I got packed up to head to the airport. We got here right at lunch time and the options were Wendy’s or Nathan’s Hot Dogs.
After five days of drinking, snacking and eating “just okay” resort food, those options sounded less than appealing. I made my own lunch of a Larabar from my bag along with a banana and yogurt purchased from a store. I’m still hungry and I have more bars and nuts in my bag to get me through the return trip but what I really need is a meal. I am ready to get back in my kitchen to cook a good dinner tonight!
Here’s a quick look at workouts this week before I board my flight.
Monday
CrossFit
4 RFT:
20 push press (65#)
10 burpees
30 calorie row
I got this workout from my old coach and friend Sean. He posts CrossFit programming regularly on his blog so I always check it out for workout inspiration. While this workout looked tough, I didn’t expect it to absolutely crush me. 65# was the RX weight for females for the push press and 20 of them at a time was challenging for me. The push press coupled with the burpees and rowing kept my heart rate through the roof for the entire duration of the workout. It took me a little over 18 minutes to finish and was the first workout in several months that left me on the floor after. I had to teach a yoga private right after finishing and my arms were shaking when I tried to lift them over my head.
Tuesday
Hot Yoga + CrossFit
After Monday’s workout, I audibly groaned during my first jump back for chaturanga during my yoga practice. I avoided upper body work later that night when I got a quick WOD in and went for five rounds of 20 double unders, 15 deadlifts (105#) and 10 v-ups.
Wednesday
Run + Squats
I got up at “regular time” (4:50 a.m.) to go to the gym but instead of training clients, I worked out myself. I NEVER workout this early in the morning (I fully accept and own that I am not an early morning workout person) but it was my only chance to get it in before we left for our trip. I did three miles of treadmill sprint and hill intervals and then back squats and abs.
Thursday
I put my girlfriends through my Running 500 workout outside in Punta Cana. It was a sweat fest.
Friday
One of my friends took us through a 60-minute power yoga class poolside. It was pretty sweet!
Saturday
3.1 mile run + weights
I ran three miles outside around the resort and then came in the gym for four sets of 15 dumbbell front squats, 5 heavy dumbbell single arm snatches on each side and 10 push ups.
Sunday
1 hour beach walk
Active rest to soak up our last morning and wrap up a week of good workouts! There was a crazy storm last night so a ton of seaweed had washed up on the beach.
Time to head back to CLT. Enjoy the rest of your Super Bowl Sunday! We don’t arrive back until the middle of the Super Bowl so I think we’ll miss most of it.
What is your “go-to” airport meal choice when options are limited?
What was your hardest workout this week?
Any fun Super Bowl plans?
Sounds like you had a great trip. I wish I was on that beach right now. I hope the trip home is uneventful.
thanks fiona! it was a really nice getaway and the travel home was perfect!
Nice week of workouts!
I really dislike eating at airports. I usually have no appetite when I fly, and get hangry. Like I am hungry but there’s just nothing that’s appealing or satisfying. If there’s a good froyo place like Pinkberry or Red Mango, I usually get froyo to tide me over.
thanks girl! and i totally know what you mean about nothing being appealing or satisfying! here in charlotte we have a jamba juice in the airport so it’s always my go-to. but many, many airports have NO good options! i’m all about packing my own snacks these days!
I love Emily Giffin also and The One & Only was just weird to me. Hands down my least favorite of her books. I had a few tough runs this week, but my best was my long run, which never happens! Have a safe trip back!
yeah, it was definitely not the best.
i’m happy to hear you had a good long run! those are so mentally tough! are you training for anything?
I just can’t do yoga right now… Emotionally it is too hard. I started going to a boot camp last week instead. Wow! I am so sore from all the different exercises. Glad y’all had a great trip– and yes, boo on Emily Giffin for sucking us in.
i totally get that kacy and have felt the same way at times. yoga definitely does put you right up against what you’re dealing with and feeling and it can be too much sometimes.
yes, isn’t it crazy how mixing it up can make you sore in places you forgot about!?

I’ve gotten to be pretty flexible about finding something at a restaurant and just making it work, even if it’s not my preference, but it’s tough to buy something at the airport that I won’t really enjoy when the food is already so expensive! I try to always carry things like granola bars, apples, and nuts with me for situations like that, but yeah, not as satisfying as a real meal. I love the feeling of getting back in the kitchen after being on a trip!
liv – i’m with you on trying to find something and yes…a bit hard to handle when it’s not your first pick and really expensive. i also love to travel with snacks these days but they definitely don’t make up a meal! it’s been so great to be back in my kitchen!
I travel with oatmeal and peanut butter packets for emergencies which I have definitely been thankful to have with me at times! If I can find yogurt in the airport, it’s perfect. Really quick overnight oats!
i was so sad that i didn’t pack peanut butter packets. i was in withdrawal! haha!
I think I’m going to do some of your workouts this week…I need to change things up. My workouts are pretty “eh” these days! It’s time to shake it up. Going to check out your friend’s blog for inspiration!
girl, i know. i have been in the same boat! we should do a trade one week and program workouts for each other! 🙂
I did my first road bike race this weekend and that was tough! I am pretty good at packing a ton of snacks for airports since you never know what their will be. However LAX just opened up a Real Food Daily which is pretty amazing!! What Emily Giffin book would you suggest I read first? I haven’t read any but people seem to like them!
congrats on your race hayley! biking is so scary to me. great job!
i love pretty much all of her other books a million times more than this one! try any of them!
Glad you had a good trip! I’m going to PR for a bachelorette party in March and can’t wait for the girl time! 🙂
that’s awesome! i hope y’all have a great time and it’s so nice to have something like that to look forward to this time of year!
I struggle with hotel food too.
I will try to at least find a piece of fruit and take it from there. I’ll often back some sort of bar too.
ditto! i typically don’t turn to bars as my first choice when it comes to meals and snacking but they are invaluable when traveling!
