After yesterday’s post about workout music I thought to myself, “they might think I have terrible taste in music.” Pop, dance and club remixes certainly have their place when I’m working out, running or teaching but they are not the soundtrack of my life. Far from it…the soundtrack of my life is actually more “cook dinner with a glass of wine and some jazz music and then sit on the couch.” I pretty much never make it out to any club and don’t even think there’s a chance of ever catching me dancing.
I love music. It’s crazy how much impact it can have on my mood. It totally pumps me up for CrossFit when the timer starts and we crank the music. I can tap into what the teacher is feeling in a yoga class by listening to their playlist. I’ve gotten into patterns where I play different types of music during different times of the day and on different days of the week. Sunny Sunday mornings call for a totally different music vibe than a rainy Monday afternoon.
I really enjoy finding new music/artists and love putting together playlists. I constantly have Pandora playing at the office and at home. Some of my favorite Pandora stations are…
– M83 Radio (more upbeat background music)
– The Cure Radio (perfect for Friday afternoons)
– Sigur Ros Radio (more chill background music)
– Mad World Radio (good background music for melancholy moods)
– Ray Lamontagne Radio (a Sunday morning staple)
– John Coltrane Radio (for above mention of cooking dinner and drinking wine)
– The Civil Wars Radio (folky and heavy on the Avett Brothers…which actually never play on the Avett Brothers station oddly enough!)
– Mumford & Sons Radio
– Florence & The Machine Radio
And here is a screenshot of some of my favorite artists/songs. I lean heavily towards folk/indie stuff.
Anyone have recommendations for new artists for me to check out? Favorite Pandora stations?ย
I was really sore from the Sunday CrossFit class so I took Monday as a rest day. I came home after work and made a big bowl of leftover Crockpot Salsa Chicken. I layered spinach, brown rice and salsa chicken and then topped it with shredded cheddar, avocado, sour cream and salsa. So good. Sullie and I took a walk after dinner…followed by a dip into the Ben & Jerry’s Banana Peanut Butter Greek Frozen Yogurt.
I woke up in the mood for overnight oats. I combined oats, cinnamon, chia seeds, dried cranberries, bananas and peaches and then mixed in Greek yogurt and almond milk.
And 30 minutes later, breakfast was served. I added apricot preserves and peanut butter on top. Overnight oats are the perfect summer breakfast. I enjoyed these so much more than my hot banana peach oatmeal yesterday.
A little laugh for your Tuesday.
This gem showed up in my Facebook feed last night…posted by the yoga studio of all people! So fun. ๐
Have a good day!
I just tried overnight oats for the first time this morning for breakfast…all of your posts about them inspired me to give them a try! SOOO GOOOD. Check out Trevor Hall pandora its super mellow and relaxing ๐
yay! glad you enjoyed them. i will definitely check that pandora station out. i need some variety!
I’ve been dying to try overnight oats for breakfast as well….your pictures look soooo yummy. I wanted to make them like the way you do…..do you put them in milk (and if so, what kind of milk) and do you add the fruits to soak overnight as well? Sorry, if you’ve already blogged about this topic. Anyways, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, receipes, meals, and workouts. I recently found your website and am totally loving it!
I have been making them almost every night to eat in the morning and I put fruit in the night before a lot! The fruit absorbs some of the liquid and gets kind of mushy but if you like that then try it! Bananas and berries are great in it ๐
i do like to make them the night before – it’s easier! but i always seem to decide i want them the morning of! ๐
Check out Local Natives, I think you would really like them.
I second Erica on The Lumineers and Melinda on Local Natives. They’re both fantastic! Of Monsters and Men are also good.
Hi there…
Check out Ellis Paul- fantastic music ๐
cool, thanks!
I have nothing to offer you for music. I go back and forth between Zac Brown radio and Toddler radio. However, toddler radio actually has some pretty sweet jams ๐
hahaha! thanks brittany!
I loved your workout mix: Avicci, Ellie, Calvin, Alex, Nero, Justin – they are some of my faves!
You should check out Of Monsters & Men and St.Vincent (Strange Mercy album is amazing!).
Check out Band of Horses… one of my fave bands!
love them! i’ve seen them live a few times too. so good!
I love that Black Keys song! It has such a great retro sound!
bahaha I KNOW I look like that elephant.
We constantly play Ka’au Crater Boys radio at our house because Ellie loves it and it kind of makes me feel like I’m on vacation
i love any music that makes me feel like i’m on vacation!
I agree the Lumineers are great. You might also like the Barr Brothers – same sort of folky sound. And check out Spotify! So much better than Pandora.
i have heard good things about spotify. i’m just lazy about switching! i’ll try it out.
We pretty much have the same Pandora channels!
Some of my favorite include: The Lumineers, Two Door Cinema Club (upbeat), Florence & the Machine, Surfer Blood (sounds weird but cool Cali retro vibe), Cage the Elephant, Death Cab for Cutie, Grouplove, Nickel Creek (Jealous of the Moon <3333), but the BEST for running I think is the Foo Fighters.
thank you so much! i’ll check some of these out. lots of love for the lumineers on here so that will be a must!
Of Monsters and men is good! My new favorite? The Head and the Heart! SOOO good ๐
I’ve heard great things about both! I’ll check it out.
So many songs to share, I am constantly looking for new-to-me songs! Love Sigur Ros, they always make it on my Sleeping playlists. I also am a big fan of similar music to you, so hopefully you enjoy some of these! ๐
“On Trees and Birds and Fire”– I am Oak
“Hold On”– Sbtrkt (feat. Sampha)
“I Sing I Swim” — Seabear
“Her Morning Elegance” –Oren Lavie
“Where Is My Mind?”– Trampled by Turtles
“Again & Again” –The Bird and the Bee
“Morning Yearning”– Ben Harper
“Let the Drummer Kick”–Citizen Cope
“The District Sleeps Alone Tonight”– The Postal Service
ashley – thanks for the suggestions. lots of new names for me. i love postal service!
I’m the same way – totally different soundtrack when I work out than when I do, well, pretty much anything else. When I’m running or on the elliptical, I like to listen to the Ian Van Dahl Pandora station – very dance-y and upbeat and it keeps me moving fast. If I get sick of that, I’ll put it on the Black Eyed Peas or Jay-Z stations.
As far as indie/folky kinda stuff, I’m a huge, huge fan of Horse Feathers and I know not many people have heard of them, but you have to check them out! So good, very mellow; and the Pandora station is really good as well.
i have never heard of van dahl or horse feathers. i’ll check it out!
Check out Of Monsters and Men as well as The Lumineers!
I love Sarah Jaroz and saw her play at The Neighborhood Theater earlier this year. She is so talented! I hope she comes around again soon!
i was sad i missed that show!
i love mumford and sons pandora station….and ray lamontagne – definitely!!!
I think you are one of the few people who not only think they look like that model when holding ‘plank,’ but actually looks *better* than the model featured ๐
I know what you mean about workout playlists and the regular stuff you listen to being very different – I like alternative rock and metal to listen to, but I have some awful, cheesy music on my iPod for when I am at the gym!
So many names I have never heard before! Look forward to checking some of them out. Some of my Pandora stations of late are Imagine Dragons and Mute Math, but if I need more upbeat it is Foster the People or Katy Perry. But like you, the day or the run often dictates the station/music. I’m totally digging “lights out, words gone” by Bombay Bicycle Club right now, and so I made them a station on Pandora to see what I would get.
i just looked up some songs by the imagine dragons last night on rhapsody. really liked them. indie sort of vibe. you might like them!
I always have music on and I enjoy quite a variety. It’s on in the car, when I’m prepping/ending my teaching day, when I make dinner/clean up dinner. I work out to music and sometimes fall asleep to it too. The David Gray Pandora station is my favorite. David Gray makes my heart beat. I’m also loving the Lumineers right now too. A friend just introduced me to them. I rotate through overplaying obsessions and am currently stuck on both fun. albums and Lana Del Ray.
I’m going to start off by saying that I love your blog. You send out such a positive vibe, you seem to love running, crossfit and yoga not only as a means to an end (e.g. lose weight or get a six pack) and that is such an inspiration to me. Until a year ago I didn’t know that that a real intense dance class with a great instructor, or a circle training class where I am swinging kettlebells and doing squats with another girl on my back and other things I never thought I would do can be so much fun in itself, and that I get such a happy feeling afterwards that can last for hours. When I read your blog, I kind of remember that feeling. Don’t know what I wanted to say here, I guess basically that you’re doing a great job with the blog ๐
Rant aside, I have a few Scandinavian recommendations that I think you might like:
First Aid Kit – Emmylou
Anna Ternheim – Solitary Move
Deportees – Islands & Shores
Kings of Convenience – Homesick
Daniel Norgren – Moonshine Got Me
All of them have a ton of other great songs, these are just examples off the top of my mind.
Obsessed with overnight oats thanks to you.
Artist: Hanson (yes, mmmbop hanson. they make new, good music)
Pandora station: 80’s or 90’s pop and Disney!
andy grammer is my new favorite find. his pandora station is so relaxing! tons of jack johnson, jason mraz mixed in there as well…
also.. if you like the band Fun., their lead singer used to be in a band called “the format” which is my all time favorite band. kind of an eclectic pop sound.
im having the crockpot salsa chicken tomorrow for dinner – possibly on top of smashed tortilla chips and rice… im excited to try it ๐
I really like the Alabama Shakes Pandora station.
oh that plank pic is hilarious!!!!!!
All good artists. I run and lift to different music. I actually love lifting to NPR. (:
I am more than pretty sure I look like that in plank haha that is awesome.
have you heard Ra Ra Riot? I love them.
Ooo yay! I love swapping music. Love the addition of WIlliam Fitzsimmons – he’s amazing. Have you heard his cover of Heartless by Kanye West and I Kissed a Girl by Katy Perry? Both are awesome!
Anyways, here’s some suggestions!
-Of Monsters & Men
-Joshua Radin
-Greg Laswell
-Priscilla Ahn
-A Fine Frenzy
Enjoy! ๐
How is that Ben & Jerry’s greek frozen yogurt? I have been wanting to try it.
