Happy Friday. It’s been forever since I’ve done a day in the life style post. They’re always surprisingly well-received (what is it about these posts that you guys like so much!?) and yesterday was a bit of different kind of day for me so I thought I’d go with that style of post to wrap up the week.
5:20 a.m. – first alarm goes off but I turn it off. I had ambitions of writing a blog post before teaching but decided I’d rather sleep for another hour. 🙂
6:10 a.m. – second alarm goes off and I spend the next 10 minutes checking emails/social media/my pregnancy app before getting out of bed.
6:20 a.m. – wash my face, brush my teeth, throw on some clothes to teach and pack a bag with a change of clothes. (Beautiful thing about being a yoga teacher…it takes no time to get ready in the mornings. I definitely don’t wear makeup or do my hair to teach a hot class!). I leave the house at 6:30 a.m.
6:45-8 a.m. – teach a hot yoga class and clean the room after.
8:15-8:45 a.m. – shower and get ready at the studio for my 30 week OB appointment.
8:50 a.m. – grab a tall soy latte from Starbucks (one shot of Starbucks espresso = only 75 mg of caffeine!) and drive over to my appointment.
9:15 a.m. – funny story, I used to absolutely dread going to the doctor and having to pee in a cup. I’d get so anxious about it that I couldn’t go! I used to have a hard time going in public bathrooms too. My grandmother always told me I had a “shy bladder.” Haha. Anyway, pregnancy has given me a whole new appreciation for the cup. The moment I arrive at the office I’m like, “can I go to the bathroom now?” Although I will say that the larger the belly gets, the more tricky this task becomes!
My appointment is quick and easy and I’m out of there in under 30 minutes. Good news…I’ve gained a few pounds, belly is measuring perfectly on track and my BH contractions have slowed enough that my doctor is feeling better about everything. I go back in two weeks.
10 a.m. – arrive home starving and make a quick brunch. I’m going to be out and about the rest of the day so I tried to make something more substantial. Two eggs scrambled with some cottage cheese, avocado toast and toast with jam. Fruit on the side.
Decide to have one more piece of toast with cashew butter, honey and banana. 🙂
10:50 a.m. – load the girls in the car and head off to their grooming appointment.
11:05 a.m. – drop the girls off at The Dog Salon. It’s been over a year since they’ve been groomed (I’ve bathed them but they haven’t had cuts) and they were WAY overdue! I have heard great things about The Dog Salon so decided to try them out. Both of them stare me down and refuse to move as I walk out the door.
11:15 a.m. – take my car in to get looked at. The check engine light was on and a notification to add a quart of oil. I edit a ton of food photos for an upcoming recent eats post while I wait. When my guy comes to check back in with me, he tells me the check engine light is reading a freaking ton of various codes and recommends clearing it and seeing what pops back up. Nothing is a “hard code” that won’t reset. Fingers crossed. I’ve had quite a few issues with this car and might need to start considering a replacement with baby coming. Uggghhhh.
Noon – I have an hour before my “grooming appointment” (I had a cut and color yesterday too!) so I stop into Not Just Coffee Dilworth to push my HomeAway post live and do the Instagram post for it. It’s my first time at this Not Just Coffee location and I love it. I have a cup of ginger turmeric tea while I work.
1-3 p.m. – cut and color at Salon 42. I’ve been seeing Jason (he owns the salon) for 8 years and love him. He keeps my hair long and my brown, brown without turning my hair a weird purple or red shade which happens too often with dark brown color. I wouldn’t color but…grays.
I work on my laptop pretty much the entire appointment and get a lot done!
It is pouring down rain when I leave the appointment so Jason sends me out in a shower cap so I don’t ruin my blowout. Haha.
3:15 p.m. – drive over to Ulta to replace my foundation and end up picking up a few other things like a charcoal face mask, some eyeliner and foundation primer.
4:15 p.m. – drive back over to The Dog Salon to see if the girls are ready but they need another hour so I swing into Common Market to do a little more work and have a snack. I eat a bag of pita chips with some pimento cheese and wash it down with a draft Buchi Fire kombucha.
I work from home and RARELY venture outside of the house to work but I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed working in different environments yesterday. I was super focused and productive and enjoyed the energy of the various spaces as well as the change of scenery. I might need to make this happen more often!
5:30 p.m. – the girls are ready and looking so stinking cute! Look at those bows! I pick them up and we head home…finally! It’s been a long day out and I’m a homebody so I was ready to wrap it up. I talk to my grandmother on the drive home.
When we arrive home I take a bunch of pictures of the girls before starting on dinner.
OMG these bows are ridiculous!
I’m surprised that the girls are totally wiped out by their grooming appointment and quickly crash after I take these photos. They are pretty worthless for the rest of the night!
One from the side to see how nice and cleaned up they are!
6:30 p.m. – I unload the dishwasher and reload it with some dirty dishes and then prep a pot of chicken, sweet potato and black bean chili before heading upstairs to relax and unwind.
I take a bath, put on PJs and then use the charcoal mask that I purchased at Ulta. I really liked it a lot!
7:30 p.m. – head back downstairs to stir the chili and spend another hour on the computer answering blog comments.
8:30 p.m. – dinnertime for everyone. I threw together this chicken, sweet potato and black bean chili but it turned out so well that I might need to share the recipe on my blog. It was amazing!
I spend the rest of the evening catching up on This Is Us and then reading in bed before turning the light off around 11.
Is it terrible if I say that I don’t LOVE This Is Us? I mean, it’s okay and I enjoy watching it but I don’t feel anywhere near as invested in it as I was Parenthood.
On a related note, I’ve been watching Shameless lately and holy cow…that show is so absurd that it really helps you feel a little better about your life. It couldn’t be more of a polar opposite from This Is Us!
Also loving…The Good Doctor!
Okay, that is all.
Do you enjoy working in coffee shops or other outside the office/home type places?
What are you watching on TV right now?
What did you have for dinner last night?
I’m late to the game on Shitt’s Creek. Seasons 1-3 are on Netflix but I may have binged watched all those and purchased Season 4 on prime. I’ve never bought a show before but couldn’t wait!
OMG those bows are so cute!
I just binged all of Black Mirror and the new Queer Eye on Netflix. Black Mirror is pretty intense but I loved it!
I have been doing a jury trial all week, and I simply did not have the energy to make dinner. So I picked up a dinner of chicken, cheese and hummus at Sprouts on my way home.
Your Goldens are so cute! 🙂
Nothing can compare to parenthood!!
Completely agree on This Is Us vs. Parenthood!!
I totally agree about This is Us…I liked season 1 well enough but just couldn’t get into season 2 so I bailed a few episodes ago. On the plus side I’m going to check out Parenthood.
Whenever I get too down on myself about whether I’m doing a good job parenting I watch Shameless—makes me feel a lot better!
Good read today. I like the day in the life format. Question, I have a 9 month Retriever, Phoebe. My first Retriever, When you take your girls in for a spa day, do you ask for a particular “hair cut” for them? I love Phoebe’s hair, It’s a beautiful dark red and it’s long, her hair by her bum is blond. Can you make a “cut” suggestion?
Chile looks great.

Jen, I hear you on this is us. Honestly I watched about 3/4 of the first season, and stopped because I felt all of the characters were so….whiny. Parenthood always felt like a better balance to me-a nice mix between funny, drama, and the everyday which made it seem more like real life (but just very well written and acted). I thought I was the only female in America who didn’t like the show!
im still getting through my olympics tivo right now so i’ve been watching a lot of that. I watched parenthood a bit and then stopped and lost interest but i always wonder if i should go back and watch on netflix. i do like this is us though. recently ive been catching up on empire and i love it.
as for working in coffee shops for me its to distracting for the work i do.
for dinner last night i had leftovers. North African Chicken and Sweet Potato Noodles from Whole30 cookbook. i loved it the first 2x i had it but this time was a bit meh over it.
This is Us is too dramatic for me, so predictable. I don’t get the obsession, I never thought this show would last after the premier. I find myself still watching bc everyone else does, so I like to be in the know for conversation, but so many better shows on tv like Bull or Wisdom of the Crowd
It’s difficult to compare anything to Parenthood! But I do like This is Us a lot.
We’re also watching a new series on Netflix… Seven Seconds. EXCELLENT so far!! Highly recommend.
Excellent blog – absolutely love it! Always so interesting, you eat so well. I’m a home body too but I’ll try working at a coffee spot for the change of scenery.
Haven’t bing watched in a while, I’ll check out Parenthood because THIS IS US sucks.
I too don’t understand the hype.
Hey Jen,
I’m curious as to what your stylist uses to cover your greys. Does he use a permanent color or a gloss? I’m a brunette and will be going to my stylist soon to cover the greys, but haven’t ever had it done. I am looking for suggestions.
Haha at the shower cap. After getting my first blowout in years I was dodging the humidity and rain too. Glad I’m not alone there…
I’ve been watching Godless on Netflix and after that it will be Black Mirror or Seven Seconds!
The girls look so dang adorable <3
Love the puppy pics! I’m in love with Beth and Randall’s relationship of This Is Us. I envy anyone that is not tied to an office cubicle. The body wanted carbs so dinner tonight is chicken and spaghetti.
AAAccKKK !!! Your PUPS!!!!! more doggie pix please……haha….Sullie’s personality oozes through the interwebz. So freaking adorable!
Did the groomers cut away their cute feathers??
Sometimes its good to get a 2nd opinion on your vehicle!
I work in an office and occasionally from home but I need a designated place to work. Not sure I could do it at a coffee shop or somewhere like that. I think I’d get too distracted. ?
I’m loving (my new guilty pleasure) Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian.
For dinner I had zucchini and sweet potato noodles with shrimp and pesto for dinner. PLEAAAASE post your chili recipe!! I’m always looking for a new recipe I can use for food prep!!
I am so with you – Parenthood blows This is Us outta the water. I like This is Us, but the writing on Parenthood was so much better. Plus, it felt more authentic and I absolutely LOVED the characters on Parenthood.
I love these “Day in the Life” posts because I love to see how people who don’t have regular office jobs schedule their time. And honestly, I always wonder how you get so much done in a day so this is good insight! How you manage to have the energy to get all your work duties done, get in a workout, take care of your dogs, cook meals, and blog (plus so much more!) is a lot! 🙂
Please post the chili recipe! It sounds wonderful. I love to eat chili year round, even though I realize that’s a little weird… 🙂
Gosh your goldens are precious. It makes me want a dog sooo badly. <3
Parenthood was very authentic. I like This Is Us, but it definitely has a lot of cheeseball moments.
I do like This is Us! It’s only one of two shows I watch right now.
I used to enjoy coffee shop working until I had my daughter and my work hours became more limited. I prefer my desk now!
I’m with you on This is Us. I watch it and enjoy it, but it doesn’t feel as authentic as Parenthood. Almost like they are trying a little hard to make me cry.
