My weekend ended with a 9 p.m. bedtime on Sunday. I don’t really know how to describe it but I’m just kind of tired and feel like I can’t get caught up. I got enough sleep over the weekend but my body has been feeling worn out and sore. I think a lot of it has to do with the amount of strength workouts I did last week (BodyPump x2, CrossFit, Fight Gone Mad) coupled with still adjusting to my new routine/schedule.
In related news, I have decided to give up my Monday 6 a.m. BodyPump class. I have been teaching this time slot for two and a half years and I need a break from it so in a few weeks another instructor will be taking over. 6 a.m. BodyPump, working full-time again and teaching a yoga class after work is just too much for a Monday. I would like a departure from the 13-hour days.
Enough whining. I didn’t mean for that to happen! Here are some scenes from the weekend.
Saturday started at Metro to get some pictures of our special St. Patrick’s Day CrossFit WOD. It was “Tabata Something Else” – Complete 32 intervals of 20 seconds of work followed by ten seconds of rest where the first 8 intervals are pull-ups, the second 8 are push-ups, the third 8 intervals are sit-ups, and finally, the last 8 intervals are squats. There is no rest between exercises. Score is total reps completed.
We had St. Patrick’s Day decorations, refreshments and Guiness for the highest scoring member. We had a great turnout and the energy was amazing. I have to admit that I was happy to be taking photos and not doing the workout! My workout was a hot vinyasa yoga class after I left Metro.
Post-yoga I hit up the farmer’s market and then went on a cleaning extravaganza. My reward for all the cleaning was baking strawberry cupcakes with strawberry buttercream. This is my favorite cake flavor ever!
Saturday night dinner was grilled corvina, grilled asparagus and Trader Joe’s Harvest Grains mix with sautéed grape tomatoes mixed in. If you haven’t tried corvina yet, you must! It’s a thick, flaky and mild white fish with a flavor/texture similar to grouper/snapper. It’s known as “California Sea Bass.” It holds up great on the grill.
I ate this bowl of plain Greek yogurt with bananas and berries before teaching my Sunday morning hot class at Y2 (where the topic was kindness in case you missed it).
I had brunch with some yoga friends after class. I had florentine benedict with fruit. The benedict was just okay because the eggs were overcooked. I like the yolks runny and these were totally solid.
The rest of my Sunday was spent running and yogaing. I ran an easy three and then went to a yoga for runners class at YogaFlex. One of my students invited me to join her for class and dinner to talk about careers in fitness. The yoga for runners class was exactly what my sore body needed. It was slow and involved some good stretching and foam rolling! I felt totally relaxed after class.
We grabbed dinner at Newk’s after class. It was a beautiful evening so we sat outside and talked until after dark! My favorite things about Newk’s is that they give you reusable plastic cups for your drinks and free breadsticks that are the perfect little snack while you’re waiting on your food.
I went with the Newk’s Favorite salad which was mixed greens, grilled chicken breast, gorgonzola cheese, dried cranberries, grapes, artichoke hearts, pecans and croutons with a sherry vinaigrette.
And then came home and ate a cupcake before my early bedtime. Hope it was a great weekend for you!
Did anyone race this weekend? How did you do? Judging from my Twitter and Facebook feeds, race season is here in full force.
Your food is drool-worthy as usual….oh my gosh those cupcakes!! I did the USA half marathon in DC this weekend…it was very fun 🙂
i love dc! i’m jealous!
You really make me want to move back to Charlotte! I was there in 98 for awhile but came back to NY….. Also I did have a race this weekend and got 3rd place in my age group – 1st medal ever!
i love charlotte! we have such nice weather and the city is so beautiful. CONGRATS on placing in your age group. so exciting!
Strawberry cupcakes! I’d pay a fortune!!!
i’ll make you some! 🙂
Yep, there is a goddess!
I had corvina at Bonefish Grill awhile back and it was delicious! I definitely want to break from my our usual grilling staples (chicken, salmon) and buy some corvina.
i’ve never eaten there but i’ve heard it’s delicious! it’s easy to grill at home. try it!
That workout sounds intense! I don’t do crossfit (way too expensive here)..but I have downloaded a few WODs that I could do at the gym I do go to. I combined three this morning for a full workout. TOUGH!!! I cheated though and took a few breaks. Otherwise I may have passed out.
some of them are easy to do on your own. awesome that you’re doing that. i can’t believe you combined three – that sounds intense!
All of the food looks wonderful as usual!
I agree 100% that strawberry cupcakes are by far the best! We have a bakery in Virginia Beach that make phenomenal strawberry cupcakes. Yum!!
We just got a Newk’s in Winston-Salem. I haven’t been yet but would love that salad!!
i haven’t eaten at one since i lived in birmingham but it’s pretty good for your basic soup/salad/sandwich place.
Your weekend food looks sooo delicious! I really want some blueberries now! 🙂
Hey! So how did you like the Trader Joe’s Harvest Grains? I was eyeing it the other day but didn’t end up getting it, looks pretty good on your plate though haha
i LOVE it! a friend recommended it to me when i ran into her at TJs last month and it will be a staple now. a great switch from rice/quinoa/couscous.
awesome thanks for the feedback i will definitely be trying it now!
keep smiling jen 🙂
I would love to take a Yoga For Runner’s class! I need to check that out. Also, I brought leftovers to the office for lunch, but now heading over to Newk’s – love their Greek salad!
Starting a new job is exhausting! Just give yourself some time. 🙂
PS Thanks for the Crossfit 50-40-30 workout- it was the perfect quickie vacation workout! I should start doing it at the end of runs too (or to warm up).
so happy to hear that the workout worked well for you on vacation. it is a very effective quick workout. my butt was sore for days after all those squats.
Your food looks great! It’s making me hungry! I ran the Publix Georgia Half-marathon this weekend. It was a hot one! I was dripping sweat by mile three. I definitely prefer to run in cooler temps but it was still fun, I’m glad I did it.
congratulations on your half even if it was a little warmer than you’d have liked. i really need to run that race one year!
Thanks, you should definitely run it! It’s kind of neat getting to run through downtown neighborhoods and the course is fairly challenging too. 🙂
Those cupcakes look amazing!
Jen, your amazing!! How do you fit it all in–All of your classes, managing, getting your pracitce and workout in — AND Spend time with your hubby & get the laundry done!?! Something I have yet to figure out!
Could you post the strawberry cupcake recipe?
No racing for me. I love when you post the cross-fit workout! I like to try them out at home!! They are seriously intense.
Ha, I always go to bed at 9 on “school nights.” 🙂 That workout looks intense. I wish I could do pullups!
I second the request for the strawberry cupcake recipe…they look tasty!
I had my big goal race of the season – my first ultramarathon! It went perfectly and I finished the 33 miles in 5:56.48…about 20 mins faster than i thought i’d do it. it was an amazing journey – belief in yourself gets you a really long way!
