Hi and happy MLK Day to my U.S. readers. I hope that whether you’re spending the day working or enjoying a day off from work that you take a moment to remember how much power you have in using your voice when something matters to you.
My weekend began in Charlotte and ended in Florida. The weekend was nothing too crazy because I’m still under the weather and Tanner was at a conference (in town but was gone all day).
FRIDAY
It was a rainy Friday night so we opted to stay in and rent a movie. Tanner suggested picking up Thai food but I had all the ingredients on hand to make red coconut curry so I threw that together quickly. I also spent a lot of the day Friday picking up and cleaning around the house and it was so nice to go into the weekend with a clean slate.
Here’s the curry recipe for those interested. It’s super simple and also can be Whole30/Paleo friendly if you’d like it to be.
We rented Battle of the Sexes with Steve Carrell and Emma Stone and watched it over the course of two nights. We really enjoyed the film and I always like when they are based on true stories.
SATURDAY
I had an early wakeup call on Saturday to sub superflow at 7:30 a.m. for Tanner. Our superflow class is the most challenging/advanced class on our schedule and it’s 90 minutes that is absolutely PACKED with hot flow. I had a bowl of plain greek yogurt with granola before heading out to teach.
Here’s my playlist for class!
I had a two-hour break between superflow and my regular 11:15 class so I came home to shower, bake sourdough and eat a second breakfast. Even though I don’t practice with my students while I teach, it takes so much out of me. I needed more fuel before going in for round two. I had a bunch of pineapple and half of a big morning glory muffin from Sunflour.
My second class of the day was amazing and we had a sold-out class of 101 yogis. January is just nuts at the studio, especially with the cold weather we’ve been having. I’ve received a lot of questions about inversions during pregnancy and I wrote an Instagram post about it on Saturday. Be sure to check it out!
I was craving a sandwich on the sourdough I’d just baked so lunch was ham and salami with avocado, muenster cheese, mayo and dijon mustard. I heated the meat/cheese under the broiler to get warm and melty. Grapes and salt and vinegar kettle chips on the side.
The rest of my Saturday was perfectly low-key after such a busy and active morning. I spent a couple of hours finishing my Amazon baby registry. I feel pretty good about where I have it right now. Lucie’s List was a HUGE help so thanks to all of you who recommended that resource.
I broke around 3:30 p.m. to take these two cuties for a walk. It was only about 40 degrees out which meant I needed to bundle up but they were in heaven. We walked for about 4 miles, a little over an hour. I listened to Bringing Up Bebe on Audible.
After the walk I went to the mall to grab a few things at Anthropologie and Sephora and then came home and had leftovers on the couch while we watched the rest of Battle of the Sexes.
SUNDAY
I slept until around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and then got up to make breakfast and write my blog post about first trimester running. This is a bowl of banana egg white oatmeal with peanut butter.
After I finished writing, I quickly got a suitcase packed and got dressed to go to the studio to teach prenatal. My class was so awesome! I had around 10 ladies ranging everywhere from 14 weeks to 36 weeks. We did a 10 minute check in, about 50 minutes of flow/strength work (we were all sweating from that!) and a 10 minute guided meditation at the end.
Next stop was the airport. It was the easiest travel day ever! No traffic on the way, easy parking, zero lines for security and no delays. I grabbed an egg/spinach/feta sandwich and a green ginger smoothie from Jamba Juice on the way to my gate.
My flight wasn’t even half full and most everyone had their own row. I spent the short 75 minute flight writing thank you notes.
And then arrived in Florida late afternoon. Although I was just here to see my grandmother in early December, I hadn’t seen my parents since earlier in the fall. I wanted to catch up with them after their trip and the holidays.
The worst part of air travel yesterday was the terrible pain I got in my ears on our descent and my right ear became totally clogged. I couldn’t hear out of it all night! I tried neti pot, hot steam shower, holding my nose and blowing and about a million other things. It finally drained overnight but that was not a good feeling. This had never happened to me before but I think it was due to the cold/virus that I’m STILL fighting off.
Dinner was shrimp and grits made by my dad. The grits were SO cheesy and delicious!
And I had a slice of peach pie with some ice cream for dessert. Our dinner table conversation/entertainment for the night was baby names. I told my parents, “someone has to help me name this child because I’ve got nothing!” I think we made some really promising progress and hopefully baby boy will have a name soon! 🙂
I’m staying at my grandmother’s condo and unfortunately she is sick too. She picked up that URI that’s going around a couple of weeks ago but seems to finally be feeling better. Between the two of us there is a lot of hacking going on over here. I’m hoping that I can get some good rest while I’m here and finally kick this stuff to the curb. It will be four weeks tomorrow and I’m ready to feel normal again.
I hope you guys have the BEST week.
Watch any good movies over the weekend?
Any favorite “takeout recipes that you make at home” to share?
Do you like grits? I know they’re such a regional food! My dad actually has to order them from Amazon because he can’t get stone-ground grits at any of the stores around here!
Totally not my place to offer suggestions, but have you considered your brother’s name? I think that would be such a sweet sentiment!! I always said if I had a boy, I’d name it for my mom’s brother who died very young. Just my unsolicited $.02! Naming a baby is SO hard!! Love reading these types of updates 🙂
Hey Laura – It’s a great suggestions but I won’t be using that name because it was my grandfather’s, father’s and brother’s name. We’ve kind of all agreed that a fourth might be a little much! I am trying to pick other family names though. 🙂 <3
Ahh, makes COMPLETE sense! I love family names! 🙂 Good luck… can’t wait to hear! 🙂 xo
Love grits or polenta but only with things like shrimp and grits or my favorite turkey/mushrooms/wine/homemade stock dish that my Dad makes after Thanksgiving each year. Feel better soon! Have fun with your family!
That leftovers creation sounds amazing!
Thank you, I am ready to be over this stuff!
Just be SO VERY GLAD your ear drained and that your eardrum didn’t rupture on the plane!! I had that happen to me once and the pain was excruciating right up until it burst but then still somewhat painful after and took weeks to heal. I do not wish that on anyone! (I had also been getting over a cold and got on a plane which caused it…yuck!)
I just spent a few days in Kentucky visiting my brother and we ate lots of cheesy grits and fried chicken/okra/hushpuppies, none of which are super popular in Colorado. Love grits!! Good luck choosing a baby name 🙂
Oh my gosh, me too. I was terrified of that happening.
Your Kentucky food sounds so good. I LOVE okra and hushpuppies!
Enjoy your time away. Hope you and your grandmother feel better soon. What did you buy from Anthropologie? It’s my absolute favorite store 🙂
Just some home stuff and gifts! 🙂 Great store for that!
I love grits. I ate them every Sunday as a child growing up in the south. Glad you are able to visit with your family.
They are so good! I used to love making big bowls of cheese grits, scrambled eggs and bacon! And thank you, I’m happy to be here.
Hi Jen,
Have you considered taking some supplements to boost your immune system? I’m no expert here, but perhaps baby is compromising it a bit? I went to a naturopath recently who suggested I try the following to boost my immune system (for other reasons): L-Lysine, S-Acetyl Glutathione, and Grapefruit Seed Extract. Of course Vitamin C and Zinc can help, too. Just a thought! Hope you feel like yourself again soon!
Michelle – I haven’t but I’m definitely going to do some reading and consider it. Thank you!
I totally got suckered into watching “Safe Haven” for the 100th time!!! I can’t help myself. It is so cheesy, romantic, and they are both so good looking. And of course I cry every time too…xoxo
Haven’t watched that one! I’ll have to add it to the list!
Jen, it is NOT funny whatsoever that your grandmother is ill, but my brain fart while reading your post might give you a needed giggle – I read “UTI” instead of “URI” when you said she was under the weather. I was so confused and horrified by the thought of mutant, contagious UTI “going around” and plaguing an innocent grandma! I AM GOING TO BED NOW.
Haha, this made me laugh! 🙂
Grits are best when topped with shrimp! =)
Also, I am jealous of the Jamba Juice. I used to fly through CLT regularly, and that was always a snack I planned on.
Yes, Jamba Juice is such a great option for a healthy airport snack!
