Hello, hello!
I hope you enjoyed the weekend. Mine was super chill but nice. I stayed in Friday and Saturday night but did get out for dinner with two girlfriends on Sunday at a new restaurant here in Charlotte, Comida.
I taught the 4:20 class at the studio and then stayed to take the 6. I had no dinner plans so we decided to have our sushi chef box some stuff up for us to take home. Sushi (or pizza) Friday night is ALWAYS a good idea! We shared two rolls and these new avocado egg rolls that we just added to the menu. They are awesome. (Related: check out our new Namastay Kitchen website. It’s beautiful!)
The rest of the evening was spent watching House of Cards. Loving this season so much.
I made a big bowl of mashed sweet potatoes and bananas with raisins, chia seeds, cinnamon, almond butter and coconut cream. I have been using full fat coconut milk and melting some of the cream that rises to the top over my sweet potatoes. It’s really delicious! I ate this while making a playlist for my 11:15 a.m. class.
I hit the gym for a quick workout before heading to teach.
Class was so good. It was one of those effortless, magical classes where everyone’s energy is perfectly aligned. It made my day.
I came home for a quick lunch before heading back to the studio for a handstand workshop and a 90-minute massage. (<– best Saturday activity!) I wrapped up my evening by taking the girls for a really long walk while I talked to my mom and listened to some of my favorite podcasts.
My fiance had to work on Saturday night so this is what my evening looked like. Leftovers, laundry, cleaning and then an epsom salt bath to recover from a long day of activity. I am reading The Light Between Oceans and really into it.
I woke up early to a gorgeous Sunday morning. I made coffee, threw on a dress and headed to an early church service. I was back home in comfy clothes and making brunch before the boy even woke up. I cooked bacon and scrambled eggs (forever a match made in heaven) with a side of mashed sweet potato bowls with cashew butter.
We had a marathon golden grooming session that involved A LOT of hair and then took the girls to the park so Zoey could chase her ball and Sullie could sunbathe. If you follow me on Snapchat (<– @jendecurtins) you’ve seen this in action. I always post a bunch of videos and pics from the dog park. Sullie’s specialty is eating grass and rolling around while Zoey is a ball freak.
I ran to Whole Foods, taught yoga and then took Sullie for a walk so she could actually get some exercise. She loved having one-on-one time and not sharing the walk with her sister. When we got home I got to get dressed up for dinner. I have been loving this turquoise eyeliner from Sephora to switch up my basic black go-to and am completely obsessed with this matte purple lipstick from Laura Mercier. I receive compliments on it every time I wear it!
Our dinner destination was the newly opened Comida in Plaza Midwood. We started with their “chewy chips” and guacamole, which have already received so much buzz in Charlotte. They lived up to the hype! What’s a chewy chip? Imagine a warm, half fried, kind of crunchy, kind of chewy, salty tortilla chip. Addictive.
All of their drinks are house-made from scratch and they don’t use any pre-made mixes.
Here’s a sampling of some of their cocktails. I had the Flor Espanola. Portion sizes were generous and drinks were strong. We each had one drink that lasted us through dinner.
Comida’s menu features “elevated Mexican fare” that is mostly small plates and things to share. Each of us got two tacos (they are like two-bite tacos, super small but good) and then we shared an octopus dish, roasted vegetables with chia crackers and a quesadilla-type dish with oaxaco cheese, kale and garnishes. We also had an unpictured lentil dish which was not our favorite.
Fun fact: the two head chefs at Comida, Willie and Hector, worked for us at Y2 this winter when we were rebranding our restaurant into Namastay Kitchen. They had a gap before Comida opened and came in to help us reinvent our menu (which receives consistent great feedback!).
We all commented that our Sundays are usually the polar opposite of what we did but that dinner out was a really fun and relaxing way to wrap up the weekend.
Do you ever go out on Sunday nights?
Any fun new eyeliner, eyeshadow or lipstick colors you’re loving? I’m in the midst of a makeup overhaul.
What was the highlight of your weekend?
I love new makeup! So fun! I like everything Dior and totally recommend their lip glow (new shade of lilac out right now – limited edition I believe!) It’s like a hydrating lip balm that reacts to the color in your lip to give you a pop of color. The lilac one will give you a bit of a lilac hue while still reacting to your own coloring. I believe there’s an SPF too!
Thanks for the recommendation. I had a Dior gloss that I really loved so I’m sure I’d love this lip glow too!
I can’t wait to start reading The Light Between Oceans. I asked for it as a gift but haven’t been able to read it yet, so I’m glad you are into it!!
It’s really good. You’ll love it.
i almost never ever go out on sunday. i usually spend sunday night getting ready for the next week with ironing, cooking, and general ick its sunday night type things. i really dont like to be out of that routine because i feel like if i dont prep for the week im all thrown off. but it looks like you had fun ! as far as lipstick i can relate. ive been using a bite lipstick in mulberry and get compliments on it too. its a purple/berry color. i love how white it makes my teeth look !
I hear you, I rarely do either and I know it can feel unsettling not to get your prep for the week done. Yes, bonus of the lipstick is definitely helping make teeth pop and look white!
It sounds like you had a great week. I bet those tortilla chips were good. The food looks fabulous. Have a terrific week!
They were amazing, I wish you could reach through the screen and try one!
Looks like a great weekend! I love the idea of “chewy” chips. I worked at Chipotle growing up and my favorite chips were the ones that were just a little undercooked.
Yes, I feel like so many things are good just a little undercooked…brownies, cookies, chips… 🙂
Looks like a great weekend of food and fun! I love that turquoise eyeliner, looks great on you. I did a makeup overhaul a little while ago. The biggest thing I did was get rid of cheap stuff, especially mascara. I’m really into Benefit They’re Real right now, and it’s totally worth the money every few months. 🙂
I have used that mascara and it is great!
That eyeliner looks amazing on you.
Thanks lady! 🙂
I have had “The Light Between Oceans” for almost two years now and have yet to crack it open. Would love to hear what you think of it! Maybe then I’ll be motivated to give it a shot rather than using it as a decoration on my coffee table.. hah!
Oh read it! It’s a sweet (but sad) story. Great writing.
I LOVE when my classes flow like that! It’s such a special feeling. Mexican is my favorite food and I love me a strong mojito. I must get to Charlotte soon. I’ve only ever been to the airport lol
Yes, it is and it’s hard to explain to people who don’t teach. Come visit Charlotte and we’ll have mojitos! 🙂
Uhm, that cashew butter-sweet potato combo just blew my mind!!!! You’re a genius! Have a great week!
It was ah-mazing. Try it!
Your make-up looks gorgeous! If you ever need to spice up your make-up, go see Anne Rhodes Mendelhson at Woo. I try to see her at twice a year and ill bring my existing make-up (everything from the good stuff to 1.00 eyeliner from CVS) and she’ll go through it and figure out a few things to add to your collection. She’s great & always suggests I try a few fun colors to kick it up a notch.
Thanks Erin! This is EXACTLY the recommendation that I needed and I’ll definitely go see her super soon. I love that she’ll help you with the cheaper stuff you have too!
I’ve heard about these chewy chips quite a few times! Adding Comida to the bucket list 😉
It definitely needs to be on the bucket list. Chips and drinks are a must.
What podcasts do you listen to? On the way to and from work, I’ve been listening to “Happier” with Gretchen Rubin (the author of The Happiness Project). I also listen to “The Bitch Bible” (it’s my guilty pleasure and makes me crack up when I’ve had a blah day at work).
I love your “on the way” versus “on the way home” choices. Haha! I love Dear Sugar Radio by Cheryl Strayed who wrote the book Wild. I also love This American Life and the TED Radio Hour from NPR. Also trying to get into The Lively Show and The Tim Farris Show.
My favorite spring/summer eyeliner is Bobbi Brown Bronze Shimmer Ink. It’s a softer, shimmery bronze that is perfect for warm weather. It stays on throughout the hottest days of summer and through teaching at the gym! Love it!
Thanks so much for this suggestion! I love Bobbi Brown cosmetics!
