Good morning! I had a good weekend but with a little scare thrown in.
Last week Sullie had a one day episode of an upset stomach but it seemed to have quickly passed and she was acting like her normal self the following day. On Saturday she had another episode but much worse this time that included diarrhea, urinating and throwing up while she was alone. This is TOTALLY abnormal behavior for her so I called my dad in a tearful panic and swooped her up and off to the emergency vet.
There is nothing fun about the emergency vet. It was $100 just to walk into an exam room and they took Sullie away while they were examining and treating her. It did not make me feel comfortable because her normal vet always sees her with me in the room. The doctor came in said that it was likely that Sullie just had a GI bug but also FREAKED ME OUT and mentioned that there was a very small chance that she could be having seizures. She recommended that they run a full blood panel on her and take abdominal x-rays. I requested that we treat her symptomatically for a GI infection and told her I would follow up with her regular doctor if she didn’t improve. I would MUCH rather her be in the care of the doctor who has seen her for five years and not an emergency vet.
They gave her an injection of anti-nausea medicine, fluids under the skin and an antibiotic.
Sullie seems to be doing well and has had no further episodes of vomiting or diarrhea. I’m keeping my fingers AND toes crossed. She’s been acting like her usual sweet self loving on her toys and begging me for attention. She’s also LOVING that I’m cooking for her. The very first thing I do when she exhibits any stomach distress is to take her off of her dog food and put her on a gentle home cooked diet.
She’s been eating lots of oatmeal, rice, ground turkey, eggs and bananas.
Please say a little prayer for my girl that this is just a GI thing and nothing more serious! I have heard from someone else that there seems to be a little doggy stomach bug going around Charlotte so I hope it’s that.
In other weekend events…one of my friends hosted their second annual food truck party. They had the awesome Charlotte food truck The Herban Legend in their driveway doing all the food for the party. I had a black bean burger and a side of a couscous salad.
She also had the most delicious cupcakes from Cupcake Delirium with flavors like Maple Bacon, Biscoff and Copycat Hostess Cupcakes. (Side note…necklace is new from Erin McDermott and I love it! It’s the perfect piece to brighten up your look! She does it in a variety of different color combos.)
I had a Biscoff cupcake and YUM! It was a fun night with some of my most favorite people!
I spent Sunday morning teaching yoga and then went to Nolen Kitchen for brunch where I ordered the breakfast pita…again. It’s just too good!
The rest of Sunday consisted of taking a yoga class, cleaning, house projects and cooking up a big batch of homemade spaghetti sauce. I’ve been making this recipe for many years and it’s my favorite. Homemade spaghetti sauce tastes a million times better than the jarred stuff and is so easy.

thanks cassie!
and the luxe box is such a treat. i know you’d love it!
Ugh My little dog has had diarrhea poop for 3 days. It is all over. My house smells digesting. I have a vet appointment for tomorrow.
Glad Sullie is OK
Jen
maybe there IS something going around charlotte or maybe it’s the crazy pollen or something? it’s awful! i hope your pup gets better. the antibiotics seemed to have helped sullie.
Sending Sullie a big hug from Houston! I used to give Kala similar human food, but never thought of bananas…Please keep me posted and thinking of you both! XOXO Oh and that burger looks AMAZING. I always love your food photos…HAHA!
thank you!
So sorry to hear about Sullie feeling bad. I know exactly how you feel… Over Christmas break, my Sasha had an allergic reaction to our Christmas tree and her face swelled up REALLY bad. 🙁 It hurts my heart so bad when our four-legged kids aren’t feeling well because we can’t have a conversation with them on how they’re feeling. Sending prayers your way!
P.S…Your spaghetti sauce looks amazing!
thank you samantha. that’s so crazy about the allergic reaction to the tree. i’ve never heard of that before. and yes! i hate that they can’t tell you what’s going on with them. it’s scary!
Poor Sullie! If it makes you feel any better, I have a golden too and he had a similar experience last year. He woke me up in the middle of the night and proceeded to wake me up every hour for the rest of the night because he was so sick. I freaked out, but it turns out that he had a GI issue too. The emergency vet also recommended the blood tests but luckily my real vet opened up the next day (Sunday) to see him because I was so panicked and gave him medicine that worked just fine. Meanwhile, I think I lost 10 years of my life that weekend. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for Sullie – sick dogs are the scariest things ever!
gosh claire, i know exactly the feelings you’re talking about. you just feel so helpless and sad for them.
Hope Sullie is ok and is feeling better soon! That’s smart that you pull her off regular dog food and just give her human food. I give my cat a bit of canned pumpkin whenever his stomach is acting up.
That egg pita looks fantastic!
sullie loves pumpkin and anything i cook for her special! 🙂
Thinking of your pup, hope things continue to go ok! I know that is the absolute worst feeling.
it’s awful because you just have NO idea what’s really going on!
Hugs to Sullie – 🙂
Hope Sullie feels better! Praying for her 🙂
thank you so much!
Oh my goodness! I am so glad she is OK! One night my puppy woke up dry heaving and shivering uncontrollably in the middle of the night and I panicked. I knew the emergency vet was extremely expensive so I didn’t want to rush in, but I also didn’t want to waste precious time if something was really wrong. I called the emergency vet crying and explained what was going on. They suggested I wait to see if he got worse and then make my decision. Luckily I tried getting some food into him and he ended up improving drastically by morning but I lost an entire night’s sleep. They hold a special place in our hearts and its the worst feeling when something is wrong because they can’t tell you!
thank you kim! wow, that sounds so scary and i’m so happy that your pup got better without having to take him in. and YES! i hate that they can’t talk to you!
why do animal emergencies always happen on the weekends! I have 4 dogs, and I have spent many a Saturday night dithering about whether or not to call the vet. I recently tried to switch everyone to a dog food formulated for older dogs, but it didn’t agree with one dog. I got suggestions to feed him pumpkin or sweet potatoes, which, oddly enough he loved! and Greek yoghurt. This guy really loves vegetables and fruit – I have seen him pull apples off the tree to eat, and forage in the strawberry patch for fruit. What a goof head!!.
i know! always! sullie LOVES pumpkin, sweet potatoes and greek yogurt and i regularly supplement her food with them. it’s so cute when they love the healthy stuff! 🙂 i love the story about your dog pulling apples off the tree. so sweet!
Looks like some super yummy eats!! I hope she is feeling better!
I’m so sorry to hear Sullie was sick but hope she’s better soon! My chocolate lab threw up last night too- and he never does. He seems ok today but I sure hope it’s not a bug!:(
aw, i hope your pup is okay!
Sending positive, healing thoughts to sweet Sullie:) I have had goldens and there is no more loyal friend in the world-they are truly special beings.
so, so, so true. she melts my heart.
I am so sorry about Sullie. Pumpkin is also a good remedy for dogs with upset stomachs. Praying for her.
thanks alli, she loves pumpkin and i have some in the pantry!
Poor Sullie 🙁 I hope she feels better ASAP. I would be so so worried about my pup if I were you!
Is that spaghetti sauce on your blog somewhere? Would love the recipe!
Hi Jen, I have a seven year old golden retriever as well and he is my heart and soul! I felt so freaked out just reading what the vet said about Sullie possibly having seizures. I’m definitely praying for her full and speedy recovery… she’s such a sweetheart. I am currently living overseas and away from my dog (who is in the good care of my parents), and seeing Sullie’s photos on your blog ALWAYS brighten my day. She literally puts a smile on my face! Thanks for sharing the Sullie love 🙂
i’m so glad that sweet sullie is doing better. how scary!!!! you are such a good momma! also, the necklace looks great on you!!
I totally empathize with you. My golden had that issue last year all of a sudden and it ended up that the food we usually buy had changed what they used so we changed it to another organic brand and she was right as rain. It’s so scary when our animals get sick, makes me feel so bad for them. She’ll be good though, no worries;)
poor sullie – i hope she feels better (and fingers crossed too). hawk had an awful GI bug last june and we rushed him to the vet…he ended up staying in the vet hospital for 2 nights. he quickly recovered but it was awful!!!!
Aww so cute I hope she’s doing Better. My dog started having occasional seizures this year and it’s so horrible 🙁
poor sullie ! my kitty had episodes on and off for like 2 years and it was horrible. i HATE the ER vet. i know they do good work and all but its hard especially when they take them away from you ! i swear one time i almost busted through the door i was so upset it was taking so long.
Oh no….I hope Sullie is doing a million times better!!!!
