Happy first week of 2022. I hope your new year is off to a good start. I very much appreciate the heartfelt and supportive comments on my last post. I have read every single one of them and will be revisiting each and responding throughout this week.
I was pretty wiped out when we arrived home from Florida last week. I dropped Finn off with his dad as we were getting back into town last Tuesday evening and spent the next couple of days not doing much of anything. It’s so interesting, I read social media posts and listened to podcasts that had complete opposite approaches to the last week of the year. They were either encouraging embracing rest and nothingness or hardcore promoting using the time to get super focused and goal-oriented for the new year. I chose the former and felt zero shame for my lack of productivity. At one point I literally Googled, “why do I feel so tired.”
The biggest takeaway from my final week of 2021 is that I rediscovered the joys of taking a hot bath so that’s definitely going to become a thing again this winter.
For the record, I don’t believe there is a right or wrong way to do the last week of the year. I think it depends on the year you had and where your head and heart space is at the end of it. I can reflect back to other years where I’ve had a lot more energy and drive this time of year. This was not one of those years but I am feeling better now.
NEW YEAR’S EVE
On New Year’s Eve I went to the gym to get in one last workout of the year. I came home for lunch and then decided to call and see if I could get an appointment to get my nails done. Luckily, they were able to fit me in at 4p. I had a manicure and pedicure and it was a really nice treat. I could have stayed in that massage chair all night! Charlotte friends, I’m loving the new Sassy Nail Bar location in SouthPark. Very modern, clean and they have the best chairs I’ve ever been in!
I was on the fence about whether to go out for New Year’s Eve for several reasons but I ultimately decided to get myself over to Dorie’s house and I’m so glad that I did.
There were only three of us (and her pups) and it was perfect. We watched the Georgia game and then the Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson New Year’s Special. I had planned to leave at halftime of the Georgia game and be home by 10p but then I got comfy on the couch and didn’t move for four hours. I made it all the way to midnight.
Throughout the night we snacked on pizza, wings, charcuterie, Dorie’s famous artichoke dip (need to share the recipe on my blog!) and my salted fudge brownies.
NEW YEAR’S DAY
I slept in until about 8:30a on New Year’s Day, made a smoothie, did a little work and then had an urge to get out for an afternoon adventure with the pups. It was 75 degrees and I wanted to spend time outside doing something active. I decided to take them to Crowders Mountain State Park for a hike. I packed a lunch for the car and we hit the road. It’s about a 45-minute drive from my house. Benji and Zoey were beyond excited to be going somewhere in the car.
We ended up hiking a little over five and a half miles and a great time was had by all.
The first three miles of our hike was wide trails. Then we spent about a mile with rough terrain and rock scrambles. I usually hike in sneakers but I was glad I wore my real hiking boots since I was managing the dogs and the uneven terrain. I had to hoist Zoey up here and there but Benji was incredible. He is so athletic and agile, and his legs are so long and springy. I swear, he never even seemed one bit tired at any point in the hike. I brought lots of water for me and the dogs and we took several long water breaks.
I loved this New Year’s Day with the pups and it filled my cup so much. Hiking is something that I really enjoy and would like to get back to doing more often. We were all so happily exhausted at the end of the day. I came home and put my feet up with a cup of ginger tea and then took a hot epsom salt bath.
THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF THE NEW YEAR
I was at the gym shortly after it opened on January 2. I owe you guys a post about this but I am very into lifting consistently right now and loving being back in the gym. Here’s the workout that I did.
I was home by 10a because Finn was getting dropped off. I rarely go longer than two days without seeing him so five felt like forever! We spent the day snuggling, cooking and “just hanging out” as Finn likes to say.
I got him this kinetic sand kit for Christmas and he’s obsessed. We’ve added all sorts of fun things to it like dinosaurs, cookie cutters and tools. I held off on kinetic sand for a while because I’d heard it was super messy but I honestly don’t think it’s any worse than Play-Doh and it’s pretty easy to clean up. Worth it for the amount of time it keeps his attention, for sure. He’s been playing with it for long stretches of time for the last few days, just like he does Play-Doh.
I’d also like to report that we are still quite attached to Godzilla over here. Finn asked if he could come to bed with him last night and I said, “of course!” He carried Godzilla upstairs, put his head on a pillow and tucked him in. He even gave Godzilla a kiss goodnight. I was smiling so hard at this whole scene.
Finn is back at preschool today and I’m trying to get myself back into a more normal routine. I have done some brainstorming around blog posts that I want to write and I have a pretty solid list. If you have any requests for things you’d like to see from me in the new year, I’m all ears! 🙂
QUESTIONS
How did you spend New Year’s Eve and/or New Year’s Day?
Do you enjoy hiking?
Any blog requests for 2021? More life? Workouts? Recipes? Anything else???
More workouts! A weekly recap of your workouts would be great.
Got it! Totally doable. I used to do that frequently. I’ll sprinkle it back in.
I am glad you were able to take time for yourself and fill up your cup. You need that right now with all that is going on in your life. We had a quiet NYE. It was like a regular Friday night with me in bed early with lights out by 9:30. I posted on Monday about not setting any goals for 2022. I don’t have it in me to challenge myself right now. I am worn out from a string of ear infections our 1yo is fighting and the resulting bad sleep. I feel like my plate is full between work and parenting so I can ask more of myself. So I fall on the acceptable side of that paradigm. I love hearing about others’ goals, though! And someday I will go back to setting goals. But not this year!
Totally agree! To be honest, I haven’t been nearly as goal oriented since Finn has been born but I think it’s all a season of life. Like you said, one year but not this year! I pray that your babe gets some relief from the ear infections soon and you all get some sleep. I know how hard that is physically and emotionally.
Sounds like a great time. And what a fun hike! Kev and I celebrated our 25th anniversary New Year’s Eve. Had sushi for dinner and it was amazing (Shakou in Barrington, IL if anyone is wondering). We went early so we wouldn’t be on the road with any crazies lol
Love life updates and healthy easy meals.
Awww, happy anniversary to you two! Sounds like the perfect way to celebrate in my book!
Thanks for the topic requests! 🙂
Jen- thank you for all that you share. We each find places to connect and learn and feel less along in this human journey. I’d love to hear more how you navigate dating and parenting and your outlook on having a full and complete life…and also open for more…?
Yep, great topic request. I have a ton to say on the subject but it’s extra hard to share publicly. I’ll work on building up my vulnerability muscles and talk more about it.
I know you’ve referenced your time in the corporate world from time to time briefly but I’d love to hear why and how you left to start blogging (or whatever your path was). I’m
Contemplating a career change (not to blogging just not what I’m doing now) so I’m interested for myself 🙂
Hey Sara – it’s been just over 10 years since I left my job in advertising. I’d love to write a 10-year reflection on what that journey has been like and where I am with it now. In the meantime, check out these posts for some background info:

You deserve rest! You have been going through a lot lately and reading your last post was heart breaking. I’m sending you lots of love and prayers for your family and you. I have actually been off for almost 4 weeks. I’m in the Air Force and was away from my family the last 6 months of 2021 so when I got home I just had to decompress. I did paint my house and did little projects around my home but the Holidays are exhausting especially as a parent. I never feel guilty about having my own personal RNR time. I spent many years all about the “hustle” and it’s good to have goals for sure but I can’t chase after my dreams for the new year when I’m completely drained. Also, I’m 100% with you on the baths. I got a wooden shelf to go across my tub. My wine, iPad and chocolate sits perfectly in it and it’s my magical place.
Thank you so much for your kindness, Tiffany. I’m also glad to hear that you are home and have been able to spend time resting. I can’t imagine the stress of being away from your family for six months. Thank you for your service.
Totally agree with you on the hustle. It is just not the season of my life for it right now.
I know the shelves you are talking about…going to need one of those!
Happy New Year. <3
Happy 2022, Jen! I so relate to your exhaustion. I took a week and a half off of work and spent a week of it too tired to really tackle any of the projects and plans I’d had in mind. At first I felt guilty and lazy… and then I realized that rest and sleep was what my body was begging for! Team baths all the way. Candles and Epsom salts really help transform my mindset.
I also wanted to mention on your last post that I have a close connection who works with transplant patients at Duke. I was so pleased to hear your family’s experience has been positive. I’d love to share more privately if it would be of help, or if you’re looking for recommendations in the area. Continued good wishes to all of you ❤️
Hi Diane – I’m glad you were also able to extend yourself the gift of grace in regards to taking rest. Sometimes I don’t think we realize how worn down we are until we slow down. Agreed on the Epsom salts and candles.
I will send you an email re: Duke transplant.
Love the photo of Finn tucking his dinosaur in for bed — adorable!
We were fortunate enough to spend the week between Christmas and New Year’s on Maui, so we were in bed early on New Year’s Eve (we watched the ball drop in NYC because that was only 7:00 p.m. in Hawaii) and up early on New Year’s Day to spend the whole day traveling home. Well worth it!
Thanks, he makes me laugh so often in all the best ways. He’s just so sweet and I love his imagination.
I’m so glad you were able to make it to Maui! How wonderful. Definitely a wonderful way to spend NYE even if you had to travel home on NYD! Hope your trip was great.
Enjoyed this post and glad you got some rest. It may be too personal but are you and your boyfriend still together? For 2022 I enjoy your posts about Finn, daily life, and your grocery hauls’
Thanks for reading and for the feedback, Courtney! I’ll definitely add dating and relationship updates to the 2022 topic list! 🙂
I would love a weekly outfit recap – I live in athleisure as well and am always looking for ways to make it look cute and casual!
Thanks for the suggestion Katie! This might also encourage me to step up my game a little…which I need to do! 🙂
Maybe… if you and your Mema picked a book or two this Spring you plan to read (since it sounds like you are already doing that) and then a post with your thoughts after finishing. If you announced the book(s) a month or two in advance of the post about it, your blog readers could read the book(s) too if they wanted to and chime in with thoughts in the comments! I have loved your reading recommendations posts every few months and hearing about the bond you share with your Mema through reading!
I am glad your mom is receiving the best care at Duke University. Thinking of you and your entire fam. <3
Hey Meredith – this is a super fun idea! I will consult with Mema and work on a book pick for spring. 🙂
Thank you for the kind words about my mom.
So glad you got some rest and relaxation! It’s well deserved. I definitely resonate with the idea that the end of the year is going to look different for each of us based on the year we’ve had, where we’re at in life, what’s going on that month, etc.
I am a new reader as of 2021 and I love your food/recipe content, exercise, lifestyle, and just how you incorporate balanced living into day to day life. It’s inspiring to see and follow along with!
Hi Rachel – just want to say thank you for reading, commenting and for your kind words! Looking forward to continuing to connect in 2022! 🙂
Happy 2022!
Oh my goodness, that last mile at Crowders is no joke – but the view on a clear day is absolutely beautiful!
